Use Google Assistant with Waze

Navigate, report, control settings and more using your voice.

Availability in English

  • Android Version 4.54 and up
  • iOS Version 4.62 and up to some users in Canada, Malaysia, Philippines, UK and US

Availability in other languages

On iOS & Android Version 4.66 and up

  • French (only in France)
  • Spanish (only in Mexico and Spain)
  • Portuguese (only in Brazil)

If you don't have access to this feature, to search for addresses with your voice tap  in the search bar.

 Turn on Google Assistant for your device

To use the Google Assistant with Waze, you'll need to turn on Google Assistant on your phone. 

Android

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Assistant app Google Assistant and say “Assistant settings”
  2. Under "All settings" tap General
    • If you don’t find “General,” first tap View all settings or See all Assistant Settings
  3. Turn on Google Assistant

iOS

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the Home button or say "OK Google" or "Hey Google."
  2. In the bottom right, tap Explore.
  3. In the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial and then Settings and then Assistant.
  4. Under "Assistant devices," select your phone or tablet.
  5. Turn Google Assistant on or off.

Turn on Google Assistant in Waze

  1. Open Waze
  2. Tap
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Tap Voice and sound
  5. Tap Google Assistant
  6. Tap Got it

You can also:

  • Turn on Share current drive info to share some of your routing information with the Google Assistant. This lets you ask questions like “What’s my ETA?”
  • Add or remove the Google Assistant microphone from the map by tapping Show on map. Removing the microphone from the map does not turn off the Google Assistant. 
  • Control when the Google Assistant responds to your voice by tapping “OK Google” detection
Note: Google Assistant replaces Talk to Waze voice commands feature.

Ask Google Assistant to help you

  1. Open Waze on your screen
  2. Say “Ok Google” or tap Google Assistant microphone on the map
  3. Ask Google Assistant to help you in Waze or with everyday tasks

What can you ask Google Assistant to do in Waze?

Drive actions:

  • “Take me home”
  • “Drive to work”
  • “Navigate to” and then say the name of a business or address
  • “Find gas stations”
  • “Find restaurants”
  • “Find parking”
  • “Stop navigation”
  • “Show alternative routes”
  • “Show route overview”
  • “Show turn by turn directions”
  • “Recenter the map”

Reporting actions:

  • “Report traffic”
  • “Report [moderate, heavy, standstill] traffic”
  • “Report a crash”
  • “Report a [major, minor] crash”
  • “Report police”
  • “Report hazard”
  • “Report flood”
  • “Report construction”
  • “Report object”
  • “Report broken traffic light”
  • “Report pothole”
  • “Report stopped vehicle”
  • "Report stopped vehicle on shoulder"
  • “Report roadkill”
  • “Report animal”
  • “Report missing sign”
  • “Report fog”
  • “Report hail”
  • “Report flood”
  • “Report ice”

Settings actions:

  • “Turn on or off voice directions” (Affects Waze voice navigation directions only)
  • “Allow or avoid tolls”
  • “Allow or avoid highways"

Note: Waze must be open on your screen to use the actions above.

Routing actions:

  • “What’s my ETA?”

Note: Routing actions are only available if you allow Waze to share your routing information with the Google Assistant in Settings > Voice & sound > Google Assistant > Share current drive info. When this setting is turned off, your routing information is not shared.

Manage your Google Assistant actions in Waze

You can see and delete your past Google Assistant actions in Waze on your Assistant Activity page. To do this, you need to be signed in to your Google account and enable Web and App Activity.

Information shared with Google Assistant

You can allow Waze to share some of your routing information with the Google Assistant:

  1. Tap Search
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Under "Voice commands" tap Voice & sound
  4. Tap Google Assistant
  5. Turn on Share current drive info 

Once turned on, you can ask Google Assistant routing related questions like “What’s my ETA?”.

When this setting is turned off, your routing information is not shared with Google Assistant. If you say “Take me home” or “Drive to work” Waze does not share your home or work address with Google Assistant.  

Android Auto

Use Google Assistant with Waze on Android Auto

Google Assistant should be turned on by default on Android Auto. If you need to change your Google Assistant settings, disconnect your phone from your in-car system and adjust the settings on your phone. The changes will apply when you use Waze in your car.

Android Automotive (AAOS)

Use Google Assistant with Waze on AAOS

Google Assistant should be turned on by default on AAOS. If you need to change your Google Assistant settings, you can do so on your phone. The changes will apply when you use Waze in your car.

CarPlay

Use Google Assistant with Waze on CarPlay

This feature is currently not supported on CarPlay.
