Pulling over, collisions, and security events

You may be wondering what to do if you experience a pullover, collision, or personal security event during your trip. Read on for some important information.

Pulling over

The Waymo Driver is programmed to pull over or, if necessary, stop in the road if it determines that to be the safest course of action. Should this occur, please stay in the car with your seat belt fastened and contact Support (in-car or through the app) for immediate assistance. We will dispatch Waymo Roadside Assistance for help if necessary and Support will keep you informed about next steps.

Collisions

In the event a collision is detected, Support will be notified and will contact you through the in-car speakers or your phone (you can also initiate a call from the passenger screen or through the app). We will also dispatch our Waymo Roadside Assistance team and contact emergency services. Our goal is to improve road safety, but autonomous vehicles cannot avoid or prevent all collisions, some of which could result in injury or death.

Personal security

If you feel your personal security is threatened while riding as a passenger, call 911 immediately from your phone. You can also call 911 from the Waymo One App (that button will send an urgent notification to Support and they may call into the car). Additionally, if you would like to speak with Support, you can use the Support option on the passenger screen or in your app. The Waymo vehicle may remain stationary until police arrive at the scene and the vehicle may communicate to bystanders using an external speaker.

Law enforcement interactions

The Waymo Driver is designed to recognize police sirens and lights and will pull over as appropriate. Support has been trained to assist both law enforcement and our riders in these situations. If your trip is interrupted by an interaction with law enforcement, Support will be notified and will contact you through the in-car speakers or your phone. Support will also speak to law enforcement officials through the in-car speakers to resolve the issue.
