Set up a voicemail greeting and PIN

You can record a custom greeting for your voicemail or use the Google Voice default greeting. Record up to 10 voicemail greetings and choose the one you want callers to hear.

Record a new greeting

Google Voice uses the default greeting unless you record a new one.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Voice app Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings.
  3. In the "Voicemail" section, tap Voicemail greeting.
  4. Tap Record a greeting.
  5. Tap Record Record.
  6. Record your greeting, then tap Stop Stop.
  7. Choose what you want to do with the recording:
    • To listen to your recording, tap Play Play.
    • To replace the recording with a new one, tap Redo.
    • To save it, tap Save. Enter the name for the new greeting, then tap Save.

Pick a different greeting

If you want to use a greeting you already recorded or switch back to the default greeting:

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Voice app Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings.
  3. In the "Voicemail" section, tap Voicemail greeting.
  4. Next to the greeting you want to use, tap More More and then Set as active.

Change PIN settings 

Use a computer to change your PIN settings.

Create or change your PIN
  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, open Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  4. Click the "Voicemail & Text" tab.
  5. Next to "Voicemail PIN," enter and confirm your new PIN.
  6. At the bottom, click Save changes.
Require a PIN to check voicemail
  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, open Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  4. Click the "Phones" tab.
  5. Under your phone number, click Edit.
  6. Click Show advanced settings.
  7. Next to "Voicemail Access," select Yes.
  8. Select PIN required.
  9. At the bottom, click Save.
