Change voicemail greeting based on who's calling

You can have one greeting for everyone who calls, or you can have different greetings based on who's calling.

Create a custom greeting for a group
You can organize your contacts using groups in Google Contacts or circles in Google+.

When you have a group or circle, it'll show up in Google Voice. You can customize call settings for everyone in the group.

Step 1: Create a group or circle

Organize the people who you want to make a greeting for:

Step 2: Find the group

  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, click Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  4. Click the "Groups & Circles" tab.
  5. Under the group's name, click Edit.

Step 3: Create a greeting

  1. In the "When people in this group go to voicemail" section, click Record new.
  2. Enter a name for the new greeting, and click Continue.
  3. Under "Phone to ring," select one of your forwarding phones.
  4. Click Connect.

If you want to pick a greeting you already recorded, select it in the "Voicemail Greeting" section. At the bottom of the page, click Save.

Step 4: Record the greeting

  1. Google Voice will call you on the forwarding phone you selected. Answer the call and record your new greeting when prompted.
  2. After recording, the new greeting will be automatically selected for the group.
  3. Click Save.
Create a custom greeting for an individual

Step 1: Find the person

  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, click Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. On the left, click History.
  4. Find a contact you want to edit. Click their name to open details.

Step 2: Create a greeting

  1. Under the "When this contact goes to voicemail" section, click Record new.
  2. Enter a name for the new greeting, and click Continue.
  3. Under "Phone to ring," select one of your forwarding phones.
  4. Click Connect.

If you want to pick a greeting you already recorded, select it in the "Voicemail Greeting" section. At the bottom of the page, click Save.

Step 3: Record the greeting

  1. Google Voice will call you on the forwarding phone you selected. Answer the call and record your new greeting when prompted.
  2. After recording, the new greeting will be automatically selected for your contact.
  3. Click Save.

Using a phone

  1. On a phone, call your Google Voice number.
  2. During the greeting, tap Star (*).
  3. Enter your PIN, and tap Pound (#).
  4. Open the settings by tapping 4.
  5. Follow the instructions to record a new greeting.

Using a computer

Step 1: Find your voicemail settings

  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, click Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  4. Click the "Voicemail & Text" tab.

Step 2: Create a greeting

  1. In the "Voicemail Greeting" section, click Record New Greeting.
  2. Enter a name for the new greeting, and click Continue.
  3. Under "Phone to ring," select one of your forwarding phones.
  4. To use the greeting for as your new default, check the box next to "Make this my default greeting for callers."
  5. Click Connect.

If you want to pick a greeting you already recorded, select it in the "Voicemail Greeting" section. At the bottom of the page, click Save.

Step 3: Record the greeting

  1. Google Voice will call you on the forwarding phone you selected. Answer the call and record your new greeting when prompted.
  2. If you selected your greeting to become your new default, after recording, the new greeting will become your default and the change will be automatically saved.
Use the standard greeting with your number
  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, click Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  4. Click the "Voicemail & Text" tab.
  5. In the "Voicemail Greeting" section, select System Standard.
  6. Click Save changes.
Use the standard greeting with your name
  1. On your computer, open Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, click Menu Menu and then Legacy Google Voice. Google Voice will look different, but you're in the right place.
  3. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  4. Click the "Voicemail & Text" tab.
  5. In the "Recorded Name" section, click Record new.
  6. Under "Phone to ring," select one of your forwarding phones.
  7. Click Connect.
  8. Google Voice will call you on the forwarding phone you selected. Answer the call and record your new recorded name when prompted.
  9. After recording, your new recording will be automatically saved.
