Dont got into maps
Click Settings --> Location --> Location services -->Timeline --> Select the account you used for keeping the timeline
it will open the timeline and there you can see if your "View your timeline" option displays thousands of visits and routes saved on this device since MMM, dd, YYYY ( it could read Feb , 12 , 2012) that means you are in business.
On same menu
you can find Export Timeline Data to get the complete JSON ( not need to go to take out )
NOTE : ONLY CLICK ON BACKUP WHEN YOU SEE THAT ITS SHOWING YOUR DECADES OF DATA ELSE IT WILL WRITE THE BLANK COPY TO SERVER...
If you want to back up click on the Back up and it will create a fresh backup file on the servers , this is the exact same file you see when you click on the maps application --> timeline --> small cloud on the right top and it shows you the backed up files.

Bye Google cloud never gonna pay or recommend ..The companies and businesses who are still trusting after this disaster good luck to them its a breach of integrity and trust
Atleast give us our data back its our PII info should not be deleted without giving us a chance to atleast download it , i can then use any other analytic tool to view my timelines but Google took the last chance without giving us the chance to backup locally ...
If they can do this to this free small service then dont expect much same can happen next to Gmail or G drive or Google photos ... without notice no back up just plain silence and deletion of decades of memories....
