Pixel 5 AOD (Always-On-Display) doesn't dim when on the Pixel Stand
0
I have AOD turned on on my Pixel 5.
Normally when I charge my Pixel 5 via cable, AOD stays at a high-brightness for a few seconds and then it dims automatically.
But when I put it on the Pixel Stand AOD stays always at high brightness, which is unbearable in a dark room at night.

In the Pixel Stand app I have everything disabled except for "Do Not Disturb while docked".

Anyway to enable AOD dimming when on the Pixel Stand?

Yes this is an issue that I am also experiencing. I have brought it to the teams attention. Please use the feedback option in system settings>about phone to report it from your end

Similar problem here but without the Pixel Stand. AOD is just always so bright, which is a really inconvenient at night.
@ScottG your report was blocked I think... I wonder if support got a hold of you about this matter.

After your reply I did and support gave me this instructions:

Go to Settings >> Apps & Notifications >> See all apps.
Tap right corner 3 dots and click on System.
Tap on Pixel ambient display. (The only option for me was Pixel Ambient Services)
Then click on Storage & cache.
Clear cache.
Then tap back and click on Force stop.
Restart the phone and try again.

I went to the basement (completely dark) and test again, it worked the first time. Then I tried using grayscale (the bedtime setting) and it stopped working. I retry the procedure above and it didn't work a second time :(

Last night before going to bed I docked the Pixel 5 and the AOD, as expected, didn't dim.
Then accidentally, without undocking I pulled/rotated the phone toward me a few degrees until it stopped charging. The AOD dimmed. I let the phone back to its normal position/angle and the wireless charging started again but the AOD stayed dim all night.

Definitely a Pixel Stand app bug that could cause burn-in issues and damage the Pixel 5 screen.

I am having the same issue, my GF told me to turn it off last night as it lit up the entire room.  Coming from a 4XL never had this issue.
As a side note, my AOD display stops working after a period of time, and the adaptive display is very flaky at best, sometimes in the daylight it reverses and makes the screen so dim I cannot read it and have to restart the phone to get the display back

December update didn't fix anything. AOD behaviour is still erratic and brightness is always high when docked on the Pixel Stand. Even worse, now I also have the bottom horizontal "home" bar stuck at high brightness on the AOD screen as well. 🤦‍♂️
This makes the Pixel Stand + Pixel 5 unusable as a nightstand alarm clock and I'm considering returning both before the return window closes if this doesn't get fixed.

The best solution I've been able to find is before I go to bed to turn off adaptive brightness, and then change the brightness to 0% (you can still see the clock at 0%). Then put it on the stand. Reverse the process in the morning. Not a great solution, but at least it's not a "night light" anymore.

I have this issue as well.  I've tested it out a lot and a few things to confirm:
-Ambient sensor does not function while on the pixel stand.  It's more than just 'it doesn't dim', it's that the aod will also not brighten when the lights are turned back on either!
-Ambient sensor works fine while charging via USB cable direct connection, and angle makes no difference (I tested to see if the leaning was the issue... It's not).
-The way to get screen dim is, as mentioned above, to pull the top of the phone a few degrees off the backrest so the charging stops, then wait for the phone to dim, then lay the phone back onto the charger.
-I don't know if it's wireless charging in general or pixel stand specific as I don't have any more WCs.

If you disable the "Pixel Stand" app, everything works as expected: the Pixel 5, while on the Pixel Stand, charges wirelessly and the AOD dims as usual.

So it's definitely a Pixel Stand application bug.

Still is an issue, disabling app just turns screen off when on stand.

I have a pixel 4xl and I'm experiencing the same issue. It appears the ambient light sensor doesn't work when docked on the pixel stand. The work around that works for me right now is to keep the phone on the stand but press the power button. Once I press the power button, the screen will briefly go off and then come back on with the brightness appropriately adjusted.

So last night mine did not dim, weird. I have also been told that the implementation of AOD is not part of the Pixel Stand and this is currently working as designed.

All please use the feedback option in system settings>about phone to tell the team to bring this back

"I have also been told that the implementation of AOD is not part of the Pixel Stand"

If you disable the Pixel Stand app, AOD is dimming correctly while charging on the Pixel Stand.
So, AOD implementation may not be part of the Pixel Stand app, but it's obviously affected by it.

The Pixel 5, when on the Pixel Stand in a dark room, becomes a flashlight, and that can't be by design.

I'm guessing their intention was for people to use the turn off screen when dark

January '21 system patch didn't fix anything. AOD is still a flashlight.

I'm still having this issue after January update as well. I had Pixel 3 for two years, and it never did that. It's too bright to sleep.

If I put it on the stand with the screen off with clock showing in dim mode, it will remain dim. However if the screen is on when I put it on stand, the screen will turn off but the clock will remain bright. If I put in on stand with screen off and clock bright, it will remain bright. It never dims properly.

Since the screen pretty makes wakes up when you put it into the stand, it almost always goes bright.
