HI all,

I received my Pixel 5 on launch date yesterday and it's fantastic. I upgraded form the Pixel 3XL which I've always charged overnight on my Pixel Stand.

I found last night that I was being woken by the room being half illuminated by the clock screen (The black screen with just clock and notification icons).

I have set up the pixel stand with the pixel 5 to set 'Screen off when dark' but it seems the sensor or camera isn't picking up when it's dark? When I placed my finger directly over the camera area of the screen it would turn the screen off.....at a bit of a loss as to what to do?

Try toggling the setting off and on again and reboot the phone

Same issue but with a Pixel 4 XL on Android 11.  I tried toggling the "screen off when dark" setting, and also forgetting and setting up the Pixel stand again.  I assume it's a bug of some kind with the latest Pixel stand app update for home controls.

I have the same problem with my Pixel 5: the display turns off when it is dark but after a few minutes (less than 5) the display turns on again and stays on.

Toogling the setting off and on again and rebooting didn't help, turning "Always on Display" off didn't help either. I also removed the Pixel Stand from the connected devices and connected it again.

The problem didn't occour with my Pixel 3XL and 4 XL.

I also have the same issue with the Pixel 5 as described by other posters. Very annoying when trying to sleep! Hope it's a bug that can be fixed

Hi, I seem to still getting the same issue after toggling on/off and also rebooting. I have found that the digital wellbeing settings for bedtime mode seem to fix it? I.e. I set the screen to grey scale, do not disturb and keep the screen dark after 9pm

Could it be anything to do with the proximity sensor issue ive seen talked about elsewhere online?

I've got the same issue, came from a Pixel 3 to the Pixel 5, and it was never a problem before.

I did notice that disabling then enabling the setting whilst on the stand would allow the screen to switch off but then almost immediately it would switch back on.

Could this be related to the over active proximity sensor whose flickering pixel is driving me crazy? For those that are not aware, this what looks like a dying pixel that flickers at the top centre of every Pixel 5.

Same issue on my Pixel 5. I have not found any way to workaround this behavior.

Same issue for me.

Moved from Pixel 4xl which worked okay, but Pixel 5 behaves differently.

I think it might be triggered by reaching full charge, but not sure.

It now wears a thick sock at night to help us sleep.

Very glamorous image for Google's new flagship phone😑

Same here as well, worked perfectly with my Pixel 3 so its driving me crazy with the Pixel 5. Not a great start.

None of the possible workarounds have had any effect for me. Placing my finger over the top of the phone will 50/50 make it turn off but it turns back on again between seconds and minutes later.

Same issue here with the Pixel 5 (coming from a Pixel 4)

I have exactly the same problem. Despite some testing, I couldn't figure out whether something specific was causing the screen to turn on again during the night.

I'm confirming this is a Pixel 5 specific issue, not happening on my Pixel 4 or Pixel 3.

Screen turns off as normal in a dark room, but after a few minutes turns back on automatically and stays on.

This issue might be affecting the Pixel 5, but not exclusively.  I have a Pixel 4 XL and see the same behavior.

I have the same issue on a pixel 4. I've tried forgetting the stand and setting it back up and it still doesn't work. However, if I take the phone off the stand when the screen is dark and place it back on, the screen will then go out. It's a fix for now, but this never was an issue on android 10.

Same issue with Pixel 5 after upgrading from 3. It seems to be when a notification comes in - regardless of what the setting is for notification displaying. The Digital Well-being mitigation also sets it off. Seems like a bug

I'm also having this problem, do we think it's something that can't be fixed by an update?! I want to return this phone if it's going to last forever

Another Pixel 5 with the issue here. The Pixel 3 running 11 didn't do it. I've tried all the steps mentioned here and get between 10 and 30 seconds of darkness before the screen comes back on.

I'm also having this issue, I have also noticed that when I take the phone of the stand then out it back on it the screen will go off for about an hour and then the room illuminates again

I'm having the same issue with my 5. The 3XL and 4 I have don't do it. Please fix.

As a workaround you can subscribe to the digital wellbeing beta in the play store and set bedtime mode to keep the screen dark, this does keep the screen off on the stand with the expense of no slideshow etc when there is enough light. It works for the time being but hopefully they properly fix it.

Same thing happens to me on a Pixel 5. The stand is now relegated to the kitchen and I plug it in to charge at night.

For me it works, when I single-tap on the screen.

After the timeout time, the display turns off again

I have the same problem. At first I thought that I was crazy because the lights were on at night and I thought I turned them off.

On my previous smartphone the Pixel 4 XL the problem did not exist.

I'm with Adam Pardis comment above. This is an Android 11 issue, not just Pixel 5. I've got a Pixel 4 XL and never had an issue with this. After the Android 11 update my phone wakes up all night long when on the Pixel stand.

I just bought a 4XL and it also refuses to go to "sleep" probably 4 times out of 5 but this is on a generic Qi charging stand. Not exactly the same as the original problem but an very similar data point...

Experiencing the same problem with a Pixel 5 and the Pixel stand. Have toggle the keep dark setting and rebooted but issue persisted.

Also toggled the wake screen up with notification, but it also persisted. I normally fall asleep with some music and it seemed to light up when the song changed but then would stay on. I stopped the music and darkened the phone. It seemed to last longer but after some time it would light up and stay lit.

Played also with the personal info settings on the Pixel stand and this only changed what was being displayed but had no effect on the staying up lit.

I received the Pixel stand update as well but the problem still persists after that.

I reported this problem weeks ago Google support was very rude claiming it was rumors and would not believe me.

The screen goes dark but it will light up the second you have a notification. Try it put phone on stand send yourself a message with another phone, screen will straight away brighten up even with do not disturb switched on.

Same crappy issue here.  Seeing no feed back at all from google here means verizon will be switching out this phone while I'm within the 14 days.  Been with the Pixel since the rip but between this and the weird top speaker...i'm most likely done

Fixed after applying the November update - in the interim I had disabled it and used the Digital Well-being app to put the screen to sleep at night, but after the update I disabled that and went back to the Pixel Stand option, and all was fine again.

This issue has not been fixed... My phone screen can be off and the room is black. The minute you put it on the stand you get the clock and white light. I have played with the settings nothing works. It's a real piss off
