Yesterday i have updated android 11 in my Google Pixel 3a, which (my phone) is 8 months old. From today morning the phone is being muted now and then. Just No Sound! I can hear nobody in phonecall, no media, no youtube...nothing.
I've searched for similar issues and tried some solutions, but nothing worked. Only restarting the phone solve the issue for a while, but after sometime the problem is back again.
Even connecting headphone doesn't help at all! 'Do Not Disturb' mode is not on and media volume, call volume everything is checked.

Same issue on a Pixel 3axl. After update sound was completely gone and said it was playing through wired headphones when none were plugged in. No way to sect play through this device. Rebooting phone fixed it for a little bit, but all sound is choppy. Bluetooth, speakers, and wired headphones all choppy.

I am having the same issue, also on Pixel 3aXL.  Audio cutting out randomly in podcasts app and overcast audio books.

Problem occurs both when using phone speakers and blue tooth headphones.  Started right after android update.

Exact same issue, whether on bluetooth or the internal speaker, in several different apps. Went in circles with Google support for a couple hours, and their solution was: Since there was no skipping on Play Music in Safe Mode, it must be the fault of all the different apps, even though none of them changed, but Android OS did....

No idea if anyone from Google/Android will read this.  But I have been able to consistently reproduce this under certain circumstances.  Its been on several different Pixel phones over the years, including my brand new 4A5G.  If my  lousy memory serves, all of these issues are happening since Android 10, and is more persistent with Android 11.

Audio appears to stop randomly, but I don't believe that its random.  There are numerous conditions where the network layer does switching (cellular to wifi, wifi to cellular, etc) and bluetooth seems to be affected almost 100% of the time, which cause audio to stop, especially when its streaming via bluetooth audio to ANY BT device (car, headset, etc)

I've been able to reproduce this in several different scenarios, all pointing to changing network state.

Leaving my house, heading out for a run, the phone is connected to wifi and says its on wifi calling.  I connect a bluetooth headset to the phone, start playing music, and as I leave my wifi area around my house, when the phone switches back to cellular, bluetooth audio streaming stops.  Happens 100% of the time.   If I disable wifi on the phone before I leave my house and its wifi coverage area, then bluetooth streaming doesn't stop by itself, so in that scenario, I'm preventing the wifi/cell handover.

Next scenario, is somewhat different, but is also specific to changing network state.  I'm driving along a rural road where cellular connectivity is somewhat spotty.   Bluetooth streaming into the car audio system is working fine, but as I approach a mountainous area where there is no cellular service, the minute the cellular service drops and the phone starts polling, bluetooth streaming stops.  This has happened since Android 10 on my Pixel 2XL for a couple of years.  It also happens identically with the new 4A5G.

There are other similar scenarios where network state changes, and bluetooth/audio appears to randomly stop, but its not random.

I believe that the network stack as implemented, has some shared connection state between wifi, cellular, and bluetooth.  I believe there is some kind of an obscure bug that causes things like bluetooth state to respond to things like a wifi/cellular state change like wifi calling handover to cellular or the opposite, as well as cellular going offline and into a polling state.

I don't know enough about how the unified Broadcom network stack is setup, (and have no patience to read the code at this point in my life), but the fact that all network MACs are unified in the Broadcom SOC (the silicon that runs all Pixel phones), and the fact that most of the network stacks are bundled, leads me to believe that there is an obscure connection between all of them causing this obscure streaming audio (especially with bluetooth)  bug to occur
