My Pixel 3 camera keeps having focus issues in the camera app. The image will appear to take a long time to lock focus with the focus oscillating on the screen. It also takes a lot longer to capture HDR images and Night shots compared to my partners Pixel Xl2 1 Recommended Answer 343 Replies 626 Upvotes

Take picture quickly with the camera app.

Hi Simon,

When this focus issue occurs, are you tapping on a point in the viewfinder to lock the focus or just using the area-wide autofocus? Does this happen with the rear camera or the front camera(s) - or both? Does the problem continue while booted into Safe Mode?

Thanks!
John

Same here..I get a wobbly effect across the screen and it has a really hard time focusing on things the closer I get. It may be something to do with image stabilization?

I am having the same issue. The camera has trouble focusing and constantly 'jerks' the shot to try to focus even on basic scenes.

Same problem here. Photo and video camera both jitter and go in and out of focus. If I time it just wrong, and the camera jitters, my picture will be out of focus when just a split second before it was focused fine. I notice it with rear camera always, but I'm not sure if it's ever happened with the front facing. It doesn't matter if I tap focus or general focus, same problem. I have not tried booting to safe mode. I also notice that I don't think it happens while taking photos inside a Hangouts message or live within SMS with the 'picture in picture' camera function. (Or whatever you call that feature)

Same issue here when taking picture or video.  Most annoying on video cuz camera usually focuses eventually.  Only seems to be issue with rear camera not front camera.  Same issue within apps such as taking picture in snapchat

same problem here and it's annoying, I've only had the pixel 3 for 2 weeks and when I hold the camera still for a photo the image bounces around the frame and I have to sit and wait for it to move towards the center and hopefully get a nice centered picture.  I never had this problem with my Nexus 5X and I have over 2,000 photos with that camera.  Why the heck is taking a photo with the pixel 3 such a pain?  Is the image stabilizer broken?

the only thing I know to do is when you click on the screen to get it to focus on something on the right side at the top you'll see a little loc. when you push that it will lock in on what you were trying to focus on but other than that I don't know how to fix it.

I have the same issue.  Video is real bad and my photos are hit and miss if take only one. Might try a factor rest at some point.

Same. I tried taking a video while walking yesterday and you would think from watching it that there was an earthquake.

Same issue. Tried all the steps including booting in safe mode, but camera still won't focus. Front facing camera is ok. Started over a week ago for no apparent reason. Today's update didn't fix it either.

Have you tried to clear cache and data on Google Camera app?

Yea I went through all the trouble shooting steps. I was able to get a warranty replacement and the refurb works great. Thanks for the response though!

I've cleared the cache and data, still getting the issue

Finally got this fixed.

I was having the focusing issue described by many here. I was out of the warranty window so google wouldn't replace it, and none of the software fixes would work (reinstall camera app, safe-mode, etc)

I took it to repair shop authorized by Google (UbreakiFix). They replaced the rear camera, and it works like new. I'm excited to have my normal camera back. Cost was just about $100 at the repair shop.
