Hi John. As you've tried other cables but without success, please check that there is no debris within the port that is preventing a positive contact.

Instructions courtesy of bG - PE)

1. Clean the USB-C port on your device. (I personally like to take a business card and fold it diagonally, as to make the corner stronger and thinner. This makes a nice scooping/scraping tool.) (Side note: this one is the solution 99% of the time. Many people think this isn't the case because they can't see* anything inside of the USB-C port, then they are shocked at the amount of dirt and dust that drops out when they start digging it out, just FYI).
2. Use a different charging cable (to rule out that the wire is not the problem).
3. Make sure the plug is fully inserted and secured into the wall outlet.
4. Try using a different wall outlet.
5. Try using a different power adapter (that's the white brick (wall adapter) that plugs into the wall outlet).
6. Make sure you're using the original charging cable and power adapter that came with the device
7. You can say to Google Assistant "Battery Troubleshooting" and go through the diagnostic process to check on your device's battery health.
8. See if you have the same results in Safe Mode.

If nothing in the above is of help, please contact Google Support to discuss your options.

Regards, Penny

I've had the same issues and Google support advised a factory reset.  I did it with no different results, same exact issue.

Remoting into the phone, the support team couldn't fix it.  A software update didn't fix it. They tried to persuade me to just use Google cloud services.  I have various good reasons not to.

Clearly based on these posts, it's a known issue, but Google support said they couldn't respond to that on the record.

They're asking me to take it to their hardware repair partner, Ubreakifix.  This is insane.  What a shabby way to do business.

OK, figured it out no thanks to Google.

The USB-C to USB-A converter provided is only for phone transfers and can't be used for a computer.

The fact that I went through an extensive trouble-shooting process with Google support remoting into my device and this issue was never divulged is incredibly disrespectful.

Google should respect its customers enough to admit that its out-of-the-box converter isn't USB-A compatible for transferring data from a computer.

It should be admitted up front, even if they don't want to provide the USB-C to USB-A native cable that costs $20 to solve the problem.

Just be honest with people so you're not wasting our time.

Today I encountered a similar issue with no USB data transfer available (Pixel 2 not offering the choice itself and in the USB data transfer option greyed out in the menue). I tried many things and used at the end as an act of desperation the one non USB 3.0 port on the laptop, which I would never use for data transfer - surprisingly that worked.
So it seems the Pixel is picky with the USB connectors.

Google please fix.

Having the same issue currently.  This is the absolute worst phone I've ever owned by a longshot. I wanted to replace it for a myriad of other reasons but now I can't even transfer all my data and photos and such off it because the USB transfer is busted. What a total fail. That and you'd think one of the richest companies on the planet could afford better tech support. Never again...

This is NOT a physical issue. There is something wrong in the update. I can reproduce this 100%.

On Dec 5th I updated my pixel3 to Android 10 security patch. It suddenly stopped connecting to my car with android auto. The phone charges, including in my car.

I cleaned out the port thoroughly. It is NOT a loose connection with the cable.

Here is the weird issue. Connecting it to my laptop seems to work only under certain conditions. (Which I'll describe in a minute.) once connected, I CAN WIGGLE THE CABLE LIKE A MADMAN, and the connection does NOT drop! This is why I believe it is not a physical issue. I've tried many cables. I believe that after the update the USB 'mode' doesn't kick in right away when you connect the cable. It seems like a delay in registering it. Windows10 reports an error almost immediately after you connect, but the phone seems to be in la la land.

If I go into USB Preferences and connect cable,  it will result in the choice for "USB Controlled by:" menu to be lit up. BUT NOT THE "Use USB for:" menu!!! The laptop still reports error. At this point, I simply tell it to let the connected device control it, this fails, there seems to be a reset of the connection, and NOW the "Use USB for" menu lights up! Now it connects to the laptop!!!! Now I can wiggle the cable like crazy and never lose connection. I can copy files to/from the phone! This is a software issue, not physical. This happens with/without USB debugging mode active. This happens in safe mode as well.

I found on my Pixel 2 device that the ONLY way to get USB transfer to work was to connect the Pixel 2 to a computer with a USB C to USB C cable. My desktop does not have USB-C and USB-A to USB-C was resulting in the grayed out USB options. I tried my laptop which has a USB-C port and by golly, the damn USB preferences/transfer option was no longer grayed out. I don't know when this change occurred, but very disappointing and frustrating.

Guys, Easy fix provided by this help support is literally real !
I cleaned it and it got my connection problem fixed, I have Pixel XL under Android 10.
Been struggling to make my pc recognize it and it always shows charging slowly without even my pc recognize it.
I took a Sewing needle and cleaned the port on my phone, needless to say I was surprised about the amount of dust that was not only stuck, but hidden, you would think it's clean but it wasn't, and I'm a clean freak person, so i was really surprised.
Connected it after cleaning to my pc and surprise it worked, but It was still showing charging slowely.
Then what i did is :

1- Press & hold Power + Volume down for about 30 seconds to trigger the bootloader menu. (screenshot of the menu attached)
2- then when prompted with this menu, use the volume up and down to navigate, and choose POWER OFF.
3-after it's powered off complelty (You need to power it off from the bootloader menu, if you didn't get this menu, you have to stay still holding volume down and power botton, until it shows up be patient, it takes time after the screen goes black, keep holding until it shows)
4- After Choosing Power OFF, Connect your device to your pc, wait a few seconds for it to show you the battery sign charging, then after turn it on.
4-normally it would show you that it's not charging even tho your phone is connected on pc, dont freak out, just unplug the usb, and plug it again.
5- charging rapidly 👌

I don't know how and why, but it worked. hope this helps.

Hey Google,
My Pixel 2 XL is not detected by my PC since the Android 10 update, it only shows Charging, doesn't detect File Transfer and so on. And this has been most/every Pixel 2XL user's problem after the Android 10 update.
I have factory reset my device twice (2ce), i've updated to the latest system update (5th of April 2020), done all necessary things i think i can do - cleaning the port, safe mode and all sort. It is glaring this is a software problem as it started mainly after the update to Android 10/Q. Please and i'm begging, help fix this and release a security/software update soon to fix it, any which way, just find solution to this ASAP.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Pixel 3 XL.

Yes I've done the Developer option
Yes I've cleaned the port
Yes I've shutdown from the bootloader
Yes I have the latest version.

Can you imagine a company this big can't configure the phone to plug in via USB so you can transfer your files to your computer.

The phone acknowledges it's connected via usb because it gives the USB options on the notification menu, but that's it, it wont even charge.

I've had the same problem.  I've tried every suggestion.
Cleaning
Clean Install(factory reset)
Several different brands of computers and different usb ports
It works with USB--C to USB-C

My issue is that my car requires USB-A to usb-c (PIXEL 2XL) and I am unable to use Android Auto.  Which is very important to me.
Spent hours trying to fix it.

I ended up buying an Apple SE.  Apple and Microsoft would be destroyed if they tried to pull this BS.
You can't take away a feature and say just use Google Drive.  I never thought I would get to the point where I switched to apple but so far at least everything works.

Pixel 2 XL worked with Android Auto & head phones for years, then after July update(2020) Android Auto head phones stopped working. Factory reset , nothing, joined the 11 beta program, nothing.

Quick charge started working after joining the beta program but Android Auto and Headphone adapter does not work anymore.

The only 2 features I really use on my phone daily.

Now my phone is a useless rock.

Ok, so i had the same issue and i tried EVERY SINGLE SOLUTION ON HERE, including spending 3 hours on the phone with Tech Support.  and NOTHING worked.

and then.. you won't freaking believe it.   I CLEANED OUT the connection port, just like several people suggested.  i had "cleaned it out" many times and even used compressed air, i was certain it was clean.  This time, i used a sowing needle to ensure i really got all the way in there and holy cow!! there was so much dust compressed in there that it was lining the bottom of the port!  i was genuinely shocked.  i picked and picked until it was all out of there.

got a NEW USB-C charging/data synch cable and it snapped right in and instantly my laptop recognized the phone and all USB options were active.  seriously.. after all that struggle with tech support and new cables and developer mode / safe mode, and all it needed was to REALLY be cleaned out.

Do it.  it's free and effective. Good luck!

Welp - Updated to the latest security patch with Build number QQ3A.200805.001 and my Pixel 2 XL no longer shows the USB options. It charges when connected to the computer and even Windows 10 (and the phone itself) makes the normal connection sound noise when somethings plugged in, but no USB options from the drop down menu on the phone. This is obviously a bug in Android 10. I've tried different cables, different computers, blowing out dust, rebooting in safe mode, powering off/on, developer mode, enabling/disabling USB debugging, setting preferred USB mode to file transfer - nothing works. This is absolutely unacceptable. I work in IT and I won't be buying another Pixel phone if Google doesn't fix this that's for sure.

Hi everyone i'm facing this problem since july now, the issue is that the pixel 3 usb-c port works only with charge and nothing else, that means it doesn't work with pixel buds, doesn't work with other headphones with jack adapter, no OTG devices work, and PC connection wont work either.
I've tried everything possible from cleaning the port to factory resetting the phone, with no results.
So i've tried to RMA from google but even if i have still warranty, i should have paid 106€ cause my back glass cover is broken. Since i didn't want to pay that much to fix the back i bought the usb-c port replacement and i fixed it myself, i thought it would have fix it but surprisingly it didn't and i have still the same issue so working charge but no any other usb-c connection.
Android 11 with last october patch didn't solved it either, still the same: usb preferences greyed out when connecting to a PC ( tried different PC: Windows 10, Windows 7 and even Linux) same result.
At this far i'm pretty sure it's a software related issue since the replacement didn't fixed it.
I have more evidences which lead to this point, a few days ago i tried to connect my Pixel C to the laptop to transfer some files and it is suddenly showing the same problem of the Pixel 3, i have to state that the Pixel C was running an Android 9 ROM so it fits perfectly in all the reported issues about it precisely that the problem pops out since Android 9 and there seems not to be any fix for this even in the last Android 11 patch.

Attempt the above solutions while the phone is tethered to the computer.

I tried all the above solutions and none worked. But it stimulated my problem-solver capabilities, apparently, because I fixed it for myself! And here is what I did:
1. Opened the USB Preferences on my phone - greyed out, and set to "No data transfer"
2. My bright idea was to see if was any different if it was looked at WHILE it was tethered to the computer. Because I realized I was always trying solutions when it wasn't tethered.
3. So I plugged it into the USB port of my computer, with the USB preferences open on my phone.
4. Watched the preferences ungrey on my phone, right in front of my eyes.

Apologies if this was made clear above somewhere, but I didn't see it. And on rereading this, I realize it may sound like I'm being sarcastic, which is not the case at all. I'm really excited I finally fixed this, because it's been a problem for months.
ALSO - it needs to be reset each time - the preference change returns to "No file transfer"
