Pixel 3 screen flashing like a strobe / green color after April update

I can confirm that the April patch does not address the screen flashing and green distortion problem.

PROBLEM:
Thus far, all four Pixel 3 devices have consistently flickered like a strobe light and/or the screen would turn green green like an old TV trying to get a signal.

WHEN DOES IT OCCUR (consistent in all devices so far):
---This occurs in an environment that is usually in a low light setting.
---The phone brightness is set between 10 to 80 percent.
---It does in both night light and non night light setting.
---The flashing/green can start at the login screen (but not all the time).
---The flashing/green can start after you've logged in and are using the device.
---This also occurs in safe mode.
---Manufacture reset does not fix the problem.

WHEN SCREEN FLASHING DOES NOT OCCUR (THOUGH NOT SOLUTIONS):
---Generally putting the phones in gray scale and setting brightness to 100 percent has reduced the frequency but is not a solution.
---In bright daylight the flashing rarely happens.

I attached two pictures that show the screen flashing/green after the April update. And another screenshot of the OS.

Just a reminder, if you are experiencing this issue with your device it is almost certainly a hardware failure and you should contact Pixel Support regarding your warranty options while your device is still under warranty.

It's still a hardware failure that's just being avoided by turning off the always on display. You should not have to turn off features to use the phone properly and there's no guarantee that the screen won't get worse or fail completely over time.

I highly suggest your contact Pixel Support regarding your options if your device is still under warranty.

Hi User 105xxxx and Marc-Andre.  This appears to be a hardware problem as none of the software troubleshooting procedures offered in this thread have solved the problem.

This being the case you will need to contact Google Support via THIS link.  Although phone support is not available owing to the Covid-19 disruption, you should be able to request either live chat or email support.

It is likely you will be asked to factory reset your phone* so you might prefer to do this, if possible, prior to making contact with Google Support.

I'm sorry we volunteers cannot help more but our remit is to offer software troubleshooting and we have no input into Google's warranty/repair/replacement service.

Regards, Penny

Please Note: Prior to factory resetting, you must know the exact credentials (password & email address) that were used when last setting up the device. Without entering this information you will be unable to regain access (Factory Reset Protection). If you change your password within a 24 hour period of a reset, another full 24 hours will need to pass before attempting to log in.

When factory resetting to correct a problem, it is preferable to do so without restoring from a backup or reinstalling your third-party apps. If the problem has been caused by either a faulty backup or rogue app(s), reinstallation will also reintroduce the fault.

Using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select,
  1. Power off then hold Power + Volume DOWN simultaneously until the bootloader screen appears;
  2. Hold Power while using the volume down button to navigate to Recovery Mode and use Power to select;
  3. You should then see an Android lying down with chest opened; press Power + tap volume UP just once and immediately release both;
  4. Use the volume DOWN button to navigate to Wipe Data/Factory Reset;
  5. Press Power to select;
  6. Press volume DOWN and use Power to select 'Yes;'
  7. Wait for the process to complete and then reboot the 'phone.

Yep, same damn problem here. It's frankly f**kin ridiculous. My phone is four months old. And I suspect that this isn't just simply a software fix. I'm so pissed with this phone. It's basically unusable when this occurs.

I am on my THIRD replacement of my Pixel 3. Flashing. Now they want to send me a 4th Pixel 3.
If you are considering buying a Google product, good luck. I am still awaiting their credit for the cost of the phone or replacement with a DIFFERENT model without this history of defect.

On each replacement, I have had to go through a torturous testing process that has taken hours and hours with absolutely NO success. And all Google offers is a 4th replacement. Where does it end.

I don not think they have any sense of supporting loyal customers. I will update this if and when Google deals fairly with the issue. As of right now, you would be NUTS to buy a Pixel.

I am having this exact issue - no luck with a factory reset. I can't find where to contact Google support during COVID, please can someone advise how to get this fixed (which appears to be a new phone)?

Just ordered my third RMA refurbished Pixel 3 for flashing in the last month. Also considering leaving the product line. Been a customer since Nexus.

My Pixel 2xl after 2yrs just started having an issue with the screen. There is bright light on the right side of the screen which makes half the screen unviewable and the phone it self is barely usable. Contacted Google , (I have device protection) so I am paying $100 fee to have this replaced

When I take a Screen shot of the phone , the lines and not visible ,so it's definitely a hardware issue. .

Looking for any help from anyone who has resolved ithis issue

Hi Penny,

I live in New Zealand so it looks like those options are not there. What can I do please as this is clearly a common fault that Google should take responsibility for.

Thanks,
Sam

Penny,
So I've been one of the first people to comment in this thread, since its inception. Yet despite the initial gripes I had with my phone, one thing I can say with absolute certainty; is that your service has been beyond exceptional. I see so many commenters airing their grievances here, and you handle most every single one with patience, grace and some surprising thoughtfulness.
In our current perception of this negatively triggering world; your positive outlook, customer service and effortless decency is astonishingly refreshing.
If no one's said it before, allow me to say it now.
Thank you for your service.

Kindness is contagious. Even in this small corner of the interwebs.

Cheers Penny! Next round is on me.

Hi Sam W 324.  I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Google provides support and warranty for their products only within the country of purchase, if the product was officially released in that country and was acquired from an authorised retail outlet.  If the product was purchased within an authorised location but then removed to one that is not, support and warranty will not be available.

Given the above, the only option open to you is to search for a reputable local repairer who could take a look at the phone for you to see if there's anything that can be done that you've not already tried.

So sorry not to be more positive.

Regards, Penny

You are all wasting your time trying to fix this issue, it cannot be fixed.  Return the phone for a refund asap if you can and buy a different phone.  Do not accept a replacement.  Google will never admit there's a problem (it's literally been years).  Your stress levels, sanity and mental health are not worth trying to persist with this one.  A great weight lifted off my shoulders as soon as I returned mine.

I received a refurbished Pixel 3 replacement phone for a Pixel 3 with the bloating battery issue. After using the refurbished phone a day later, the phone began flickering. I then found this thread. Great... after sending in my working but bloated Pixel 3, they give me one that is barely usable flickering uncontrollably. It was nice to get a replacement even though my old Pixel 3 was out of warranty, but it seems like a cruel trick. I agree with Naf Au, there is no software fix. The refurb was clean and reset when I got it and I installed several updates to no avail. I'm beyond frustrated to say the least. I purchased a Pixel 3 at full price ($800+) less than 2 years ago that could explode and sent a replacement that flickers enough to give a person epileptic seizures.

Google support has been responsive and that is a plus. As a former iPhone user, this Pixel 3's features and functions are great. I wish I could say the same about the hardware.

My wife just got a refurb Pixel 3 this week, her battery was crashing from 100% to 0% sometimes in 30 seconds, just started it.

Verizon was really great getting her the refurb but now we're on vacation and not sure how it's going to work.

Turning off the AOD helped for now. Calling Verizon back tomorrow morning.
