Pixel 3 turning on camera and stuck in restart loop 15 Recommended Answers 124 Replies 252 Upvotes

Hello,

My Pixel 3 randomly started launching its camera today. While the camera would be open, the power pop-up screen would also display and it was frequently pulsing on the screen as the phone was vibrating. It also got itself stuck in a restarting loop where the phone would turn black and then display the google logo but would not progress from there and would instead turn black again and repeat. I was able to break the loop by restarting the phone and entering safe mode, but about 5 minutes later the camera self-launched again and continued with the same issue described above. After one of the restarts it did stop and has been working normally for the past 10 minutes or so.

I did not recently download any new applications so I doubt that could be a reason behind it.

Do I need to update software or do anything to ensure this issue is actually resolved? Is this an issue to speak to my wireless provider about/ have them look at the phone in store? I want to prevent this from starting all over again soon as I'm concerned it isn't truly fixed yet.

Thanks.

Hello Sarah, this sounds like a bad power button which seems to be randomly pressing on its own, this is the reason the camera is auto starting because every double press of the power button launches the camera, this is also the reason you're seeing the power menu. Whenever it auto presses and holds it shows the power menu and whenever it auto double presses, it launches the camera. This is also what's causing your phone to be stuck in a boot loop because holding the power button while the phone is booting force reboots it.

I would recommend contacting Pixel support for your warranty options.

I started to have the same issue. My phone was lying on my desk when suddenly it rebooted itself in an infinite loop, the camera was opening and the power pop-up screen displayed. It felt like the power button was having a life on its own!
But I can not reproduce the issue now... It happened very randomly

I had the issue shortly after the December security updates. Problem occurred a few times then stopped. After the January updates i now frequently get boot loops. Sometimes i have to wait for the phone to die 100% then connect to a charger.

My Pixel 3 also keeps getting stuck in the reboot loop. I turned off the gestures earlier today as some posts on here suggested, however it started doing the reboot loop once again just a few hours later. I did the Android 11 update and started having this issue the next day.

Does anyone know exactly what is backed up if you do a factory reset? Also is doing a factory reset even the solution?

My Pixel 1 did this same thing, I thought perhaps it was an issue because it was the first model. I'm wicked bummed because I love my Pixel but idk if I will buy another if this keeps up.

I took my Pixel 1 in to get fixed when this happened last time, but the tech people couldn't find anything wrong with it.
