Pixel 3a Speakerphone not working when in-call 0 Recommended Answers 239 Replies 488 Upvotes

Been having this bug since a few days ago. I didn't really do any major changes to the phone configuration, I've tried updating it to the latest security patch and latest google play security revision.

When calling or receiving a call, and enabling the Speaker functionality, I won't hear anything from the other side, however turning back off that will make sound come out of the smaller speaker from the top of the phone.
This seems to me like a mixer_paths issue.

Has anyone else experienced this on their Pixel 3a's?

I have a Pixel 3XL and this same problem just started a few days ago for myself. Whilst on a call and on speakerphone, the person whom I'm speaking to can't hear anything or is only able to hear static.

I'm having the same issue on my Pixel 3a. It started over a week ago. I thought it was only the speakerphone, but it is also not having any sound when the phone is supposed to be ringing. The phone hasn't been dropped or misused in any way.

Hello all,

Does the problem persist in Safe Mode?
Have you tried with a different SIM card?
Have you tried turning on (or off) WiFi calling?

You can also try clearing cache and storage from the Phone app:
Settings Settings app > Apps & Notifications > See all > Phone > Storage > Clear cache > clear storage

If none of these suggestions work, please let us know; we can continue troubleshooting

I've tried all of the above. Still not working. This has been like this on my phone for a few weeks. Could it have to do with a bug in the latest update? This happened right after I updated my phone.

Thanks for your help

Try clearing cache and storage from the Google app:
Settings Settings app > Apps & Notifications > See all > Google > Storage > Clear cache > clear storage

The Google app is tied in with many of the Pixel's system processes, OS, & UI. Clearing cache and storage from the Google app is often like a "defibrillator" that gives your device new life.

I'm having the same issue can we have one of the super capable Android Devs at Google address this please its not a minor feature, its a fundamental function of the phone and it really isn't good. Not to mention all it takes is a few Youtube influencers to jump on this and it will become a serious problem, so please escalate this quickly.

Could be a faulty/over sensitive noise cancellation issue...

Does the problem persist if you put it on speaker and then press MUTE?

Can you here the other person (despite them now not hearing you)?
marked this as an answer
Relevant Answer
Yes it has the same issue even when the mute is on and speaker phone is enabled, and no I cannot hear anything at all. The crazy thing is I can hear YouTube videos from afar but cannot hear notification noises, ringtones, speaker phone operation during a call or even previewing notifications or ringtones under the sound setting in either safe mode, regular mode or after performing a factory data reset. I have a pending RMA order with Google and the technical rep couldn't answer how or why the device would've spontaneously had this problem now. Its really concerning because if this is firmware related how will I prevent this on the new unit I receive? If they can't even locate the cause.

It is not a faulty/over sensitive noise cancellation issue...the speakerphone does not work during a phone call or when i play media

Does the problem persist if you put it on speaker and then press MUTE?  NO

Can you here the other person (despite them now not hearing you)?  NO i can't hear them either

I have tried booting in safe mode & clearing the cache but nothing works.

My phone is having the exact same issue. None of the notification sounds work, including the alarm, which is really frustrating, -even when I set it up to be a Spotify alarm. However, after some minutes, music will start playing by itself, even if the Spotify app is not active. Is my phone haunted? I am thinking about returning it for warranty, but it seems it's a software issue.

I'm having the same issues - with a new 3a.  I just got the phone in early December and the speakerphone hasn't worked for about the last 3 weeks.  I've tried all of the above suggestions - nothing works.  I can hear nothing on speakerphone and the caller can barely hear me.  Really frustrating.  Any more ideas?

You can try a Factory Data Reset. Just read about it first so you know what it entails. If that doesn't work, you might want to try calling Google 1:1 Support.

Should have posted sooner - I did wind up chatting with google support as I wasn't comfortable doing a factory reset myself.  The lady I spoke with was very helpful and patient.  The factory reset worked (at least for now) and my speakerphone is currently working.  I must say though I'm leery about it for the future.

In my case this was a hardware fault. No resets whatsoever did help to fix this issue. Shame on Google for shipping cheap and faulty hardware that breaks with barely a couple of weeks of usage.

I went to store they asked me to leave for 10 days so they can send it for repair but 10 days without phone is impossible
I guess they should have replacement like iPhone on the spot

I bought a Pixel 3a about 6 months ago and just last week, the same thing happened to me.  After 3 hours debugging with Google support and much frustration, they told me to take it to ubreakifix (their service center partner).  I took it to them and they had to keep it overnight, but they found the problem.  Apparently the Pixel 3a has multiple speakers.  The speaker that the ringer, alarm, and speakerphone use was bad.  But other speakers used for media and other things was OK.  They replaced the speaker and it seems to be working fine now.

Same issue with me. This persists on a Whatsapp call as well - not just a normal call, so it isn't something to do with the Phone app. I also tried restarting, clearing Cache and factory reset. Rep agreed and referred me to ubreakifix for warranty coverage. Called them and they said they've seen a dozen faulty phone speakers over past couple of months. They had part in stock. Drove 30 minutes, dropped off phone, and fixed within 2 hours. Excellent help/service experience. I hope part lasts. GOOGLE NEEDS TO ADDRESS HARDWARE PROBLEM!!!

I'm pretty sure it was the same symptoms as everyone else. Ubreakifix explained to me (and I think someone on this forum said the same) that there's 2 speakers, 1 of which is specifically for the speakerphone of the phone. I didn't seem to have any problems other than a completely dead speakerphone that was working one day and then dead the next.

This issue cropped up for me yesterday as well.  I had an early pixel version as well but I attributed this EXACT SAME PROBLEM to the fact that I bought it refurbished.  I'm disappointed that this necessary feature cannot be solved this way.  I vote for a factory recall.  I don't care that you have a pixel 4 out, I still bought this phone brand new.  You should issue a recall and either reimburse or provide us with a phone that works.

Exact same problem, sound got very distorted and dim during a phone call using the speaker. Google assistance made me proceed to a factory reset, and now it does not work at all, ringtones don't work, alarms behave erratically... My 3 months old phone is under warranty but they want me to pay for a new one upfront, send back my unit and eventually get a refund, this is not customer service, this is a scam. This problem is well identified, should be no discussion replacing faulty units.

  1. I can drive over 40 miles to a repair shop (I'm under Shelter in Place here in California)
  2. I can send the phone to Google for repair and wait 7 to 10 days to get it back.
What fantastic options you offer Google!

Currently in a "shelter-in-place" state, and they suggested I borrow a phone from a friend or family member. I haven't had direct contact with anyone in over two weeks, and I need my phone to work from home. Mailing in with no replacement phone is not an option, Google!

I've just encountered the same issue. It was less than twelve hours (overnight and then a morning charge) between no problems and the speaker emitting static noise.
I've noticed it also occurs when initially playing any music or video from the bottom speakers, too.

**Update** Talked to Google support and was told to take it into a repair place (that accepted the warranty. Repair place said it was an issue with the loudspeaker itself, not a software issue. They guessed that perhaps one of the recent batches of phones got a poor-quality loudspeaker shipment. New speaker in and everything works fine now!

I dont think they have a solution at all, I have been informed to receive an update in like couple of hours and it has been 24 hours already. I am not sure if they even know what the actual solution to this. I think if the phone doesnot support calling then the whole idea for which the phone (was invented) was purchased is killed. I feel i will loose the money i bet on this hardware which is still not ready for market and consumers. No wonder Apple doesnot even bother to consider pixel a competitor yet. The big reason for it is lack of customer support.

I had the same issue with my Pixel 3A speaker not working (bought in Nov.2019). Spent close to 2 hours working with a virtual assistant, following all the troubleshooting instructions to no avail, including a factory reset. I was then contacted by someone saying that since my phone is still within 1 year warranty, they will provide a replacement. When I followed the link to order a replacement phone, I saw that they were offering a refurbished phone, so I wrote back to them, expressing that I didn't think providing a refurbished phone was fair. Also, I noticed that, even though it would eventually be removed, the hold they put on my credit card, was for the original full price of Pixel 3A. So I mentioned that it didn't make any sense when they're offering a refurbished one. None of this made any sense to me since the problem with the phone was not at all due to my neglect. I mentioned all of this to the customer support and received a response assuring that refurbished phones meet the highest standards. Also, a condescending reply to my note about the amount held on my credit card, basically explaining that it will be removed- I already knew that. I mentioned the amount held to show how much sense it didn't make. I was then contacted by a supervisor expressing that they understand my concern but can't help me with a new phone because they have a "finite" number of new devices. I'm sure that they would only be decorating their warehouses for the foreseeable future with the new devices after people read this thread about Pixel 3A. I'm indignant as a customer for the unfair policy. I've held Google up to a better standard than this up until now. This would be my last experience with a Google phone.

And as of today it does not even ring.  For those of that did Factory Reset, did that work? Btw, I have done all of the above stuff like clearing cache etc. I bought this phone last June from Google directly. Chatted last night with a rep. He suggested they send me new phone. But will this be brand new or refurbished? At first I thought this was software problem but based on what I am reading it sounds like hardware issue. Same thing here, It's actually just the bottom right speaker that seems to be responsible for the issue. The top speaker works fine, so music sounds OK but the speaker phone uses the bottom speakers and I am unable to hear the person on the other end of the phone call. My phone is less than 7 days old, looks pristine and this happened in the middle of a phone call! Definitely a hardware issue from my perspective. It seems a speaker replacement would do the trick and in which case a refurbished phone may be a better option than a new one. Google support is working on it right now so we will see what their answer is...

Same here, had my phone replaced by a refurbished device (!) then the second phone, which by the way was acting weird from day one (sound only from bottom speaker during calls) made a crackling sound during a call then the speaker was gone for good after just one week (no loud speaker during calls, skype, no sound for alarms... bad quality sound when playing videos). Now they insist on doing the same procedure, reset to factory settings, I guess to replace it again, I don't believe they can provide a phone that will work, replacement is not the solution, it was not the solution the first time, the solution is a refund and buying a working phone. google doesn't seem to be able or caring to provide a working phone. Bad product, horrible customer service, shame on you.

I started having same issue i.e. no ring tone, speaker phone not working. Tried phone reset and many other options but nothing worked.
Contacted google and they will send another replacement phone , though they will put charge on my account ( full price , it does not make sense since replacement phone is refurbished so why charging full amount for refurbished) . Any way, amount will be refunded once I ship back phone after I receive another phone.
Other option is to send your phone and wait for 10 days and either they will fix it or send you replacement phone and in this case, you will not be charged.
