I have the Pixel 4XL and the mic on my bluetooth headphones will not pick up sound outside of phone calls. Phone calls work as expected but if I try to use the assistant the phone defaults to it's onboard mic (it will not use the headphone mic). My headset and it's mic worked just fine with my Pixel 2. I'm running into the same issue with the bluetooth connection in my car. Anyone run into this and find a solution?

I just got off the phone with support for a while and it looks like this is a bug.

They said they would get back if they find a resolve or update.

I am having the same issue. I also upgraded from the Pixel 2. I still had mine and tested if it worked still on my old Pixel 2 and it does. The problem for me is only on the Pixel 4 XL. I noticed that it never switches over from the built in mic to the Bluetooth one, so the input is stuck on the phones mic even if sound plays out through the headset.

Another odd thing probably related to this, all sound plays through the headset other than the Google Assistant on the Pixel 4 XL. This also works correctly on the Pixel 2.

To sum it up, on the Pixel 4 XL:
- Bluetooth microphones don't seem to work.
- Google Assistant seems to be silent over Bluetooth (but can be activated).

Also have the same issue. Between this and the popping sounds in 3rd party apps I am just about done with my pixel experiment

I think I got a similar problem.
While listening music over bluetooth soundbar if I receive I call I can not hear the other person.
I have to switch turn off the bluetooth in order to speak at the phone.

I also can't use the mic when my phone is connected to my car via Bluetooth/android auto.

Have to disconnect everything and use loud speaker.

I too have the same problem with both my cars however when I use my Sony bluetooth headset, I can place calls without problem, not sure where the issue is.

Did the update fix this? Can anyone confirm ?

Relevant Answer
I can confirm this also on my Pixel 4XL, it even messed up with my Sony headphones, Plantronics headset and with android auto on my cars in dash radio in my car becuase android auto uses Bluetooth for the phone calls, people can't hear me if I call them or they call me the only way I have found to fix it, is to restart the phone, then make the phone call and it only lasts a little while; however, it defaults back to the same problem and you once again have to reset the phone, it's very annoying. I am trying to see if turning off battery optimization will fix it, but I will test it tomorrow and post results around same time.

I spent 3 hours on the phone with Google support when received my preordered phone couple of weeks ago to diagnose this problem. Was occurring on both my Acura and Volvo. I already returned the phone. I still have my Pixel XL and that works fine but just learned they aren't supporting the phone after this month. Unacceptable testing for a company this size. Good luck to all!  Considering a OnePlus.

Okay so changing the Bluetooth power optimization to unmonitored did not help, problem remains and I had to restart the phone again to get it to work, how are other people not noticing this? lol. It happens whenever you connect another Bluetooth listening device to the phone and once that happens the mic input from the Bluetooth no longer functions and you have to restart.

According to Marco (earlier post), Google Support has said this is a 'bug.' It would be helpful if you could leave feedback (Settings > About Phone) to draw this issue to the attention of the development team. Although you won't receive a personal response to your feedback unless the team requires further information, the more reports on a particular issue the team receives the more attention it will receive.

You can also make contact with Support via Settings > Tips & Support on your 'phone.

Thank you.

Penny, that report feature I've always seen does nothing, it would be better if they actually had a way to report it to an official website and even get a response back, but Penny you just telling us to leave feedback means nothing to us, in fact, we want results not excuses or options to report that we already know about and have reported to already.  I feel that these websites help others like us report a problem and get it out on the net when there is a problem instead of trying to hide it with feedback reporting, however, when a certain subject or problems arise on these forums that get a lot of views or posts, the development team or whomever is in charge of fixing these errors needs to acknowledge us and tell us they are working on a repair, otherwise, if this is how their customer feedback system works to get it fixed, then it needs to be overhauled becuase it's not acceptable that a flagship phone like this even have this type of error coming out of the gate.

LOL John Smith, what exactly are they going to do to fix this over a phone call? It's software related, meaning we cannot fix it and they have to, however, if you have any other ideas besides throwing out a phone number that will do nothing for us, I'm listening.

Don't know if it was the restart , or the update patch.

Also today when I connected my phone to my car receiver via USB after resetting it yesterday my calls worked, in fact, I connected my Bluetooth headset from Sony WH-1000MX3; I was able to make a call on the headphones and after I powered them off, I tried to reconnect to another Bluetooth headset or car receiver via USB and the Bluetooth mic no longer functions. That's the closest I can narrow this scenario down.

This is beyond ridiculous. This is the most advanced Android phone on the market and they can't fix this simple issue that every single other phone deals with.  In my area, it's illegal to use a phone in any other manner than hands free.

This problem was actually best thing to happen for me. I returned the Pixel 4 XL and after some research purchased a OnePlus 7 Pro. Could not be happier. Google should stick to software. Android 10 coupled with their Oxygen OS is clean and fast. I couldn't hope and wait for a software patch for a problem that may be hardware related. In addition, the hours I spent on the phone with Google support a couple of weeks ago when the phone first came out was not confidence inspiring. Good luck to all!

I think I have the same issue, as of last week, when my pixel 4 xl is connected to my cars bluetooth hands-free speaker system, someone calling me, will not be able to hear me speak. I can hear the other party just fine.
This must be fixed with priority, since we are a hands-free state and not taking calls while driving in the car is problematic.

Having the same issue. I have tried pixel buds, Jabra elites and my truck Bluetooth. All have one-way audio where the term side cannot hear me until I disconnect from Bluetooth source. For me, it seems to be since November update. Pixel 4 XL.  I have a ticket opened with Google and they said they checked and don't see any issues from others. Took me two seconds to find this thread.

I will have to try this tonight after work.  When I call, or receive calls, I can hear them through the car speaks just fine.  They just can not hear me.  I have a 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid with Sync.  Never had this issues when I connected my 2 XL.

Same issues with Pixel 4 and multiple bluetooth headsets. I think it's an issue with the last Android patch update, because when I've bought the phone, the same bluetooth headsets worked properly and issues started after the update.

This is still an issue, only works with a Bluetooth microphone after restarting the phone and reverts back to the same bug after a while. This is getting increasingly frustrating !

The following does not do anything:

Try going to
 settings:
  google:
    account services:
      search,assistant and voice:
         voice
and then toggle the Bluetooth audio recording switch.

Same here. When I connect to the car the other party can not hear what I'm saying but I can hear them. This is intermittent but have tried repairing, disconnecting etc but the only solution is a restart. Also happened once today with my Sony headphones... Come on Google we should be past this crap.

Same issue.  4XL connects to my car (Tesla X), and can stream audio.  But, will not enable hands-free calling.  If I place a call, will not automatically connect with car.  If call comes in, car does not receive it.  This is a new problem in the last month - worked perfectly before.  Can't find any mention of the issue in Tesla forums, so think it's a 4XL issue.

I too had this issue. Connected phone to my vehicle and while I could hear the other end, they could not hear me. Then randomly, two hours later when I got back in the car, it worked calling and receiving. The weird thing is (other than this issue), when looking at my infotainment system, the phone says "no service". Yet it works perfectly. No idea...

Same thing happened to me. Whatever Bluetooth device I use (car, headphones),  nobody can hear my voice on phone calls. But I can hear them loud and clear. I reset network settings. But it still did not work. They are sending me a third replacement phone. If they don't fix it, I will switch to OnePlus.

I'm glad I have found this thread.

My 4XL is 3 weeks old and have the same problem as everyone else here.

I thought it was my car, then the same thing happened with my headset and then my wife's car.

Complete BS that this sort of thing can happen when we spends multiple hundreds of dollars on a product.

I expect more Google.

Fix this within the month or I will be going back to my retailer for a refund.

Same problem here. Bluetooth mic does not work on my Sony headphones or in my BMW. I'm on my third pixel 4 XL.
Is this only an Android 10 issue or is it a Google pixel issue?

I've done all the options shown in this thread:
  1. reset wifi... settings
  2. ensured all updates were applied
  3. went to google > account settings > .... and turned on bluetooth toggle
  4. restarted phone after each item tried as well
NOTHING has fixed this issue. Is it August yet? I'm going back to Samsung. I've returned two different headsets thinking it was their mic, when clearly I've been wrong. I'd searched the net for settings of those devices that needing fixing, and then tonight realized I never looked to see if the Pixel 4XL I have is the issue. Wish I'd looked up that search sooner.

Just ridiculous. Even with a ticket submitted to help others hopefully gain traction on a solution...I will not get another google phone. A Bluetooth headset is a daily use for me and not working is not acceptable.
