Unable to send or receive messages through the Messages app on Android 10 1 Recommended Answer 21 Replies 50 Upvotes

I installed Android 10 on my Pixel 3 on Sunday, and it was functioning just fine for a while. I was able to send and receive SMS messages through the messages app.

Yesterday, upon sending a text, my phone shut off and went into a boot loop. I was able to get the phone back on by booting into recovery mode. This happened a few more times when trying to send texts, but it eventually stopped. Now when I attempt to send a message through the Messages app, it disappears and does not send.

If I have the Messages app set as default, I will not receive texts whatsoever.

If I use the Verizon "Message+" app, I can send and receive SMS and MMS messages just fine.

Troubleshooting steps I have already tried:
- Delete app cache and app data for Messages app
- Delete app cache and app data for all SMS/MMS/messaging related apps
- Rebooting the phone
- Removing and reinserting my SIM card

I feel as though this issue might be related to chat features, because the settings sometimes says "Chat features are not available for this device." If I switch my default sms app to Message+, then back to Messages, I can enable chat features and I can send and receive texts for about 30 seconds. Then the app goes back to not allowing me to send or receive anything.

Kind of bummed that I can't use such a basic smartphone application on Google's latest phone on their latest OS. But at least I can work around this for now with a different default SMS app.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Alex,

Many suggest that running a  Factory Data Reset from Settings (optionally without restoring from backup) following major version upgrade can be beneficial - particularly when issues emerge like this so I suggest you try that.

I think there is an issue with the Google Messages beta app itself, and think is has something to do with the code for the non-carrier RCS implementation. Since the last 2 betas, I stopped getting SMS near completely. If I did, they were seriously delayed. I have a cloned sim in an old Nexus I hadn't connected in forever, and when I booted it up, it pulled down tens of messages which I never received. As soon as it updated the Google Messages app version, it stopped getting SMS as well. Uninstalling, clearing data/cache rebooting, removing SIM, switching to another SMS app, etc, none of it worked. Only way on my OnePlus 3 was to factory reset the phone and not install Messages. Tried it once and installed Messages, got the same behavior as soon as I installed the Messages beta app. After the 2nd wipe, I didn't install Google Messages, and it is working perfectly.

No, I wasn't sure how wide spread the issue was and didn't want to reinstall the app to submit a ticket just to then be forced to wipe and rebuild my phone a 3rd time. Took me near 24 hours to isolate the issue and regain full functionality. Should probably submit a ticket on my test phone, but figured if it was a widespread issue, I would have seen more chatter.
