Have removed and reinserted SIM, have restarted device, have checked updates, and have messed around with sound settings to see if it'll suddenly start working again, but nothing. I NEED MY ALARM SOUND!!!

I have the same issue. DnD is off. Tried turning it on.

When I tap on a ring tone, or an alarm, I get no sound. This started Monday or so this week.

Same here. Just started happening today, after casting to a Chromecast Audio device then stopped casting. I have not installed anything new in the last few days.

If a timer goes off and I play audio from an audio-based app (Spotify, Pocket Casts), the timer sound will be playing on top of the audio. But when I stop the song/podcast, the timer will no longer sound, though the notification will indicate it's still going off. Strangest thing ever!?

My device:
  • Pixel 3, Android 9 (Pie) Mar 5 Security Patch
Things that play audio properly:
  • Audio apps: Spotify, Pocket Casts, Google Play Music, etc.
  • Google Assistant responses
  • Touch sounds (Settings › Sounds › Other sounds and vibrations)
  • PhoneDialer tones
Things do NOT play audio properly:
  • Timer
  • Alarms
  • Sounds previews – Anywhere you can pick a sound, they will NOT play, custom or default.

If connected to a Bluetooth audio device, it will play timer and alarm sounds!? 🤔

What I've tried so far:
  • Verified Do Not Disturb is off
  • Verified all volume levels are at least at 50%
  • Restarted phone in Safe Mode
  • Force stopped and deleted cache and storage from: Clock, Sounds, Sound Amplifier, Settings
  • Restarted (again)

Another piece to the puzzle…or a red herring:

I just noticed my bottom/right speaker doesn't sound at all. Playing a test track where sound plays in one channel at a time, on the right channel test, my Pixel 3 only plays in the left speaker at a lower volume. My guess is that it's related, but it could just be a coincidence.

Either way, it looks like I'll be doing a factory reset and if that doesn't fix both problems, I'll contact Google for a replacement. Glad I kept my Pixel 2 as a backup phone!

I have the same problem on a pixel 2 with the stock alarm app. I also get no call dial tone, but can get media sounds. I've tried resetting the clock app, clearing the cache, installing another alarm clock app, all to no avail. I'm currently using a Samsung phone just as an alarm clock.  This started a few weeks ago for me. I don't hear previews on alarm sounds or ring tones, but do for media. Weird.

I'm having a similar issue.

I have DND turned off and all sounds turned up. Within the clock app none of the sounds will play when I preview them. When my alarms go off it will vibrate but make no noise. Outside the app all of my media (Spotify, YouTube, etc...) play normally. I also noticed speakerphone does not work (the other person on the line can hear me but I can't hear them).

I've tried clearing the cache of the app and force stopping it. Turning the phone off and on. I finally tried factory resetting tonight. It did nothing to help. Any other suggestions?

I have the same problem on my pixel 3. I get audio when watching videos, but no sounds whatsoever on incoming phonecalls and my alarm. Talking on the phone is fine.
This is irritating because unless I sleep with my phone inches away from my head to feel alarm vibrations, I don't hear my alarm and have already missed one important meeting because of it.
I don't understand how I can have video audio, but no audio on incoming calls or alarm. My alarm and ringtone settings are set to Max, and the phone is NOT in do not disturb mode. It worked fine for the first few months, but then at some point rather randomly it just stopped.

What gives? For a $1000 phone this is a piece of junk.

My husband’s pixel 3 XL just started this issue as well. He got his phone in February 2019. His alarm does not work at all, but his ringtones and video sound seems to still work, for now. I hope Google brings an update soon to fix this patch. $1000 is too much for a phone that’s gonna just stop working properly within 5 months of usage.

-Ringtone sound not working
-Alarm clock sound not working
-Any audio (examples being Spotify Music, Youtube Videos, etc.,) drops in volume within one second of playtime even with maxed volume settings on
-Speaker phone does not work, recipients can hear my line but I cannot hear theirs, it is as if they are muted from me

Very upsetting considering this is my first day/experience with the Google Pixel 2 XL. Hopefully Google will soon come forth with a response soon.

My version of the problem: setting/having a second alarm seems to keep either alarm from making sounds.
Plus, when I am playing music in my car via Bluetooth, the volume level randomly goes down, and I have to reset it several times. It usually only happens for the first few minutes that the phone is connected to the car.

A different but similar issue is happening on Pixel 3's. Check this thread. https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/1669559?hl=en
With our issue though, we lose 1) speakerphone, 2) ringing, 3) text sounds, and 4) alarm sounds. We hear media normally. Also, the phone will ring like normal if called by the Hangouts Ringer app. Hopefully, this is not caused by Hangouts being phased out. Yikes!

Also, hard factory reset (without import), safe mode restart, and bluetooth toggle do nothing. My provider is sending me a new phone under warranty which will be a shame if it is a software issue like it seems to be.

Lastly, i didn't initially notice all of the "dislikes" on the "recommended answer" at first. Obviously that approach is working for almost no one. got any other ideas?

My phone timer sound doesn't work or even vibrate.  Why have an timer with no noise or vibration?  My media plays normal volume, then inexplicably drops to a whisper.  My  phone will not ring, just vibrate.  My speakerphone allows me to talk, but I can't hear the person on the other end. My alarm vibrates, but again no sound.  This is messed up!  Can't believe google isn't working on this IMMEDIATELY!!  If you don't want your brand trashed, do SOMETHING!!  I took a chance on your phone and this is the thanks I get???  This is after I sent my phone in under warranty to fix the camera that inexplicably failed.  These are basic  functions!!

Same here.  It started when I upgraded to Android 10 on my Pixel.

If I go to the sound settings screen, phone ringtone screen, the screen is blank.   so is the default notification sound screen.

When I back out of those screens, numbers display below those headings.  It's like it doesn't recognize what sound settings I had, which were just default sounds in the first place.

Tried the suggestion of changing my assistant voice and restarting but no luck.
I turned Do Not Disturb on and then off, no luck.

I do hear the unlock sound.

So I started searching the net and I think I have found a solution by applying some tricks I found online. My Pixel 1 on Android 10 has been working for past 3 days with no issues. Here is what I did:
0. I assume you are on Android 10
1. Boot in recovery mode
2. Reset the phone and wipe out cache partition
3. Setup quickly the phone, keep SIM inside, but don't connect to internet (turn off data)
4. Restart the phone and enter safe mode while booting
5. Go to settings and remove "Guest" user from your phone (it looks like nothing changed but don't worry and carry on)
6. Restart the phone - it should be back to normal

TL;DR: If your speakerphone and ringtone previews don't work, phone is shot, send it back
I'm disappointed.

This thread has gotten too big, too many different issues straying from the original topic.
My symptoms(same as others on here, and in order of discovery):
-Speaker phone does not work
-Notifications and calls make no noise
-Changing volumes in volume mixer doesn't preview any sounds
-Previews for notifications, ringtones, etc. do not work
-Alarm makes no sounds, only vibrates

I just unboxed this Pixel 2 (build # PQ3A. 190505.001) after taking out an insurance claim on my last Pixel 2. The history of this Pixel 2 is unknown but this issue came right out of the box. Another thread claims it is an internal wiring issue; I have no clue on the accuracy of that claim. Read and tried every, EVERY single post on this thread, it was painful, and yielded nothing. I'm currently in the middle of downloading an Android 10 upgrade, we'll see what this does.

Shocker, it did nothing.

Google, this thread is massive, and isn't the only thread; yet this issue has been, for the most part, completely ignored. People who have contacted Google were merely sent a new phone; That's damage control, not a solution. I'm also surprised and dissappointed to note that this issue has persisted not only through multiple generations of android software, but has also occurred on all models of Pixels, generations 1, 2, & 3. This is absurd.

Bravo!  This fixed it for me as well.  What is strange is, that small alert flashed for about a second (or less), then went away.  Not enough time to register it was there AND read it.  It took me a couple of tries to time it so I could hit the "settings" link on the right side.

This was a new phone, so wondering whether this odd setting is on by default (could have been the Android 10 update as well).
