Front camera distortion 1 Recommended Answer 39 Replies 112 Upvotes

The front camera distorts selfies squishing the photo once it's processed. It's awful. I look like an even fatter cow in the processed picture. I've looked online and apparently this is a common issue among pixel 3 users. The front camera is basically useless and takes terrible photos. I really wanted to love this phone, but this issue makes me want to switch to a different phone  Please fix your software. Has anyone figured out how to fix this issue??

This issue is also happening with my Pixel. The photo immediately looks 'fine' ie in proportion, but after processing/rendering it changes the proportions of your photo & distorts the face, creating a subtle fish-eye like effect. It's almost as though it's correcting for a wide-angle lens even though it's not one.

One work-around I've found is:
Go to settings - camera settings - advanced - HDR+ control. Select to turn HDR+ control on.
Now, open your camera app, at the top toggle HDR+ to off.

After that, I no longer have the distortion issue in the front camera. However, in portrait mode it still occurs, I'm assuming because HDR cannot be manually controlled in that setting.

It's not a vanity issue, you can see the rendering distort the photo in realtime and the result is all selfies have a bizarre fisheye quality.

I'm also getting the same issue. It distorts the photo and shortens my forehead... Right after taking the picture, and switching to the photo you can see it go from a normal photo to the rendered version which sharpens the picture and "softens" the facial features and you can also see the forehead being squished. I turned off HDR and it seems like it doesn't happen but the photo quality is not the same... Please fix this!

Yes this has been happening to me too! It really seems to happen when i'm taking selfie with a friend. If this doesn't get fixed I will not be purchasing the pixel 4. I have had the pixel 1 & 2 and loved it. But the pixel 3 has really turned me off. The front camera processing is so bad - people look distorted and bigger after HDR processing has finished, everyone who I have taken a photo with thinks the same. So it is the camera! Also i know it's a software issue because before it processes the photo I can see that the photo looks like what I took it's after the processing finishes that the issue happens. So annoying! Please update the camera system. Please!!

I had the same issue, then i found a Pixel Camera Port that worked on my Pixel 3.

You can see in the settings of this app under "PX Mod Settings" - "Extra Features" that there is a function enabled called "Disable Farce Warping" .. exactly what i needed, hope it helped you too.
