Just shifted to a Google Pixel XL from an iphone and one week later hells breaking loose.
Initial problem: Cant unlock the phone via Pattern- Tried unlocking many times but does not work. It recolonizes if a wrong pattern is input but wont unlock on the right pattern.
Restarted the phone - It does not  work DUH.. the phone needs the pattern compulsorily after a restart and that was the problem.
Now panicking -  tried a factory reset - THis does not work
Tried locking device and erasing device - does not work.

PS: bought 2 devices and problem started 12 hours ago for both the devices together.

Hi Prashanth. Normally when an unlock pattern or PIN is not recognised, a factory reset from Recovery will allow you to regain access as it wipes the unlock pattern or PIN from the device's memory. Did you buy the Pixel XL new or was it secondhand? If the latter and the previous owner didn't remove their A/c from the 'phone, you will not be able to gain access without entering the owner's credentials used to set up the 'phone in the first instance (Factory Reset Protection).

Could this be the reason you're unable to regain access?

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same issue. My new Pixel XL was working fine until yesterday. I was able to unlock using fingerprints but PIN was failing. But at some point android forces you to unlock with the PIN and now my phone can not be unlocked... I know the PIN is correct since it was working before and if I enter an invalid PIN it will tell me but when I enter the right PIN is starts the unlocking process but will bring me back to the lock screen after a second.

I can't use my phone anymore and I don't want to wipe everything because of that bug.

Hi Mohamed and Nicklas. This thread refers to Pixel phones. For other Android devices, please see the designated Help Centre/Community Forum here: https://support.google.com/android/?hl=en-GB#topic=7313011 where you may find help from others with the same model phone as yourself.

@ Ron: As it stands, we volunteers can only pass on the advice we've been given or have read elsewhere. Currently that is to factory reset from Recovery in order to regain access if the issue relates to the lock-screen pattern or password (not to be confused with lockouts caused by falling foul of Factory Reset Protection.

Another, impractical suggestion I've read about is to leave the device alone for a week and then try logging in again. Some have apparently found that having done this, they are then able to login again. This would be reasonable if another phone was available to use in the meantime.
