Lockscreen Loop: Pixel looping back to PIN screen after correct PIN is entered 2 Recommended Answers 172 Replies 349 Upvotes

I have recently updated my Google Pixel XL to Android 9. Noticed that when I entered in my PIN it didn't unlock straight away so was using just my fingerprint to unlock whenever I went to use the phone. Then had the bright idea of restarting the phone to see if that fixed the PIN issue...except when restarting, a PIN is required as double security. I am now stuck: I enter my PIN and the screen goes black as if it was unlocked but then comes back to the lock screen. I keep typing in my PIN and it just keeps coming back to the same lock screen.
  • No, I have not forgotten my PIN. It accepts the PIN as correct because any other combination comes up as "Wrong PIN" but when I type in the right PIN it goes black and comes back to lock screen.
  • I have since done several restarts and still no change
  • Tried rebooting in safe mode but still comes back to lock screen after I log in
Has this happened to anyone and what did you do to fix it? I really don't want to have to delete everything and reset

EDIT: DON'T DO IT if you have anything valuable stored in system keystore (e.g. saved password, OTP tokens). I messed the keystore doing it. Needs further research.

I've had the same issue on an other phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 with LineageOS 16.0) and managed to fix it. Root (not necessarily su) and enabled debugging with adb is required.

On computer issue commands:
adb root
adb pull /data/system/locksettings.db
to backup it to computer just in case. Then:

adb shell

Something like this should appear:
jflte:/ #

Issue the following commands:
cd /data/system
mv locksettings.db locksettings.db.old
reboot

and after reboot the lock screen should be gone. Open settings and set it up.

If you don't have root in Android, but you have recovery with terminal or file manager, you can also move or delete the file /data/system/locksettings.db from there. I recommend to backup it before doing so.
