"Now Playing" not working

Hello, I updated my advanced sound preferences to show what's playing when my pixel 2 is locked. However, after several different songs, my phone refuses to show any "now playing" information. Are there any other possible settings that I may have blocked or turned off (like microphone settings) that could affect this feature?

One thing to be aware of is that the Pixel 2 will only check for music once every minute so it may take up to a minute to recognize a song that's playing. Also, it only recognizes songs that it has a "fingerprint" for. If it's an obscure song it may not recognize it.

Hi PS,

To add, I would recommend testing this with a song known to work - such as Rap God by Eminem as mentioned in this article.

Thank you both! I had played several songs (entire) from my desktop through Google music and I had assumed that the Google Music corpus would be representative of the Pixel's internal library. My phone quickly picked up Rap God so now I know it works!

Not working for me at all on the 2XL. I have done the toggle off  then shutdown entirely. Start phone and then turn now playing on, then a restart. That didn't work and someone said that it may help. I tried it with always on screen on and not on. I tried the Eminem song Rap God that they say it should know. I've tried many popular classic rock songs like Blue Collar Man from Styx and a few others. My mic works for phone calls and recording video. Not that this feature is a necessity but it would be nice if it works if it's part of the price of admission. Tough to say if there is a mic issue but other things work with the mic but this is technology and weird things happen sometimes.

Just got my XL 2 Panda yesterday. I can't seem to get it to pick up anything. I tried the whole song of Rap God played through my computer not through google music and I got nothing. Everything is turned on for it but I get zero notifications.

Mine surprised me yesterday with some songs it listed on the lock screen. If it polls every minute it may miss some in addition to not having the fingerprint for many. It is a great feature that will likely get better with age.

I tried everything, resetting the phone. updating, truning on and off the feature, plugged adn not plugged in, using and not using wifi, nothing works.  Chatted with the Pixel support and nothing seems to work. I guess I have a faulty Pixel 2 XL.
They said it's fine, but nothing works. I've played all popular songs, but my Pixel seems to be deaf.
the mic works btw.
I've been using iPgone for more than 10 years and tought that Google did an awesome job with the Pixel 2. but I guess I was wrong. Really disappointed.

If this is an important feature for you, you should probably request a phone exchange via chat.  I can't use something I paid for if I am not 100% satisfy with it.

The problem is Google's music recognition just stinks.  Using the widget or the "identify this song" option in Play Music is equally as useless.  Shazam on the other hand will get 95% of song in less than 4 seconds, so its not a microphone issue.

I am returned my 1st pixel 2 xl because Now Playing was not working. I spent about 2 hours troubleshooting with two different google reps. Tried every security update since launch as well as 8.1 Uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Toggle on and off etc etc. On phone 1 I transferred all data and apps from a 5X. On phone two I transferred everything from my original Pixel 2 xl. While I didn't try Rap God on the original phone, it picked up within seconds on the new phone. So did several other songs I tried on my original. The feature definitely seemed defective on my original device.

It it does. It was working great from the time I first got the phone. Now, it has stopped working and I can't find a solution to get it working again.
