Issue with photos taken by the Google Camera sometimes not saving, happens on the Pixel 3 too and is absolutely infuriating

I've been observing a bug where photos taken on Pixel phones (Pixel 2s/2XLs and now Pixel 3s/3XLs) sometimes don't save at all.

The little preview icon in the Camera gallery circle shows it. You switch to Photos or some other app, and poof, it's not there. Switch back to Camera, and you can watch the preview actually disappear in front of your eyes and go back to the previous picture that did save.

It's been happening to me on the Pixel 2 XLs, but before I got the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, I saw this tweet from Daniel of Android Central calling out the problem on his Pixel 3: https://twitter.com/journeydan/status/1051988879874523137.

Today, a day after receiving the Pixel 3 XL, it happened to me: https://twitter.com/ArtemR/status/1052973589983506432.

Andrew Martonik, also of AC, chimed in and said it happened to him too https://twitter.com/andrewmartonik/status/1052973821240651776.

Has it happened to you? Chime in here and we'll try to bring Google's attention to the matter.

David Imel from Android Authority said his Pixel 3 XL is similarly affected and didn't save multiple photos in the past https://twitter.com/DurvidImel/status/1052983052081590272.

I have never heard of this before today, as it didn't happen on my Pixel XL or Pixel 2 XL.

Last night, it happened to me on my Pixel 3 XL out of nowhere, but I thought it was a random glitch. Didn't think twice about it until I saw your post on Twitter.

Hopefully this gains some traction because it's only a matter of time before I take a picture that is (slightly) important and it disappears.

Has happened to me multiple times on my Pixel 2XL out of nowhere. This needs to get fixed ASAP.

This happens to me regularly (2-3 times a month) on my Pixel 2 XL. I suspect some serious flaw or bug in the read/write components (HW/SW) of these Pixel devices. Is this all related to the root cause of intense lag on my and OP's Pixel 1 and 2 devices?

Happens on my Pixel 2 XL multiple times, too. I mainly did not care a lot but sometimes it is really not nice. Never talked about it but seems I never was alone with this "bug".

I've had a Pixel 3 XL since late last year (due to https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/1666140 ) and this didn't happen any more; the camera app did get an update some time after the comment re the update.

Subjectively, the camera app now drains the battery rather quickly now. Taking ~100-200 pictures will easily eat 50% of my battery or more.

Still, given the alternative, this is acceptable for now, IMO.
