Pixel 2 XL - "Android Core Apps" Eating Up Battery After February 2018 Update

Hi, my Pixel 2 XL is having bad battery life since installing the February 2018 update. Most importantly, something called "Android Core Apps" is eating up battery life, this was not the case before installing this update.

On tapping Android Core Apps, it shows "Call Log Backup/Restore" has been running the background and eating up battery life (screenshots attached). Similarly, the Pixel Launcher itself has been using a lot more battery than before.

Anyone else with these same issues?

@Haris: Most people that have seen this say it was cured by rebooting the phone. Try to replicate the issue while running in Safe Mode to rule out a 3rd party app.

Haris did jcarrollpe's suggestion fix this issue?

Having the exact same problem since Feb update! Apparently the call log backup app running in the background is to blame.
The guys at XDA have figured out a temporary solution, however it seems that Google needs to bring in an update to fix this permanently!

Dear Orrin,

I've been able to identify the exact issues causing the battery drainage. This has risen only once I'd updated my phone to the February update.

The first biggest drainer of battery was the android core app 'Call Log Backup/Restore'. On an average, 30% battery drain (out of 100) was being caused by this single app running as 'active' in background. I simply disabled this app, and my battery life improved to some extent - earlier, post the Feb update, my entire battery was getting drained to zero (from 100) just by afternoon; after disabling this app, it started lasting till evening.

However, it still did not improve to the pre-Feb update: a second android core app called as 'Contacts storage' started using battery in a similar manner. On an average, 15% battery is being drained by this very app running constantly in the background. So far I have not disabled this app, fearing that it may hamper my phone's contacts storage/backup abilities.

Please note:
- None of these apps were draining as much battery / running as long in the background constantly before the Feb update. My battery in those days used to easily last the entire day till midnight from an early morning charge. Now, post the Feb update, my phone barely lasts till early evening.
- I am unable to access any of these 'android core apps' from the Apps section in the settings menu - they do not seem to be appearing in the list of 'all apps installed'.
- As suggested in the topic earlier, 'a phone reboot' does not fix the above issue.
- Some forums, such as XDA, have been able to identify a solution for this. This solution requires re-setting the Google accounts and re-syncing of all contacts from start. This is a temporary and a practically infeasible solution and therefore, a more permanent fix is required for this.
- A lot of topics have opened up within the Pixel user community itself regarding this issue. So it is clear that a lot of users are facing the same problems as mentioned above.

Let me know if you need further info in this regard.

Cheers!
Rahul

Hey everyone,

So I have figured out a quick fix for this battery problem:

Clear cache for Google, Google Play Services, Google Play Store and "Call Log Backup / Restore" apps. Charge to full and then check. This worked for me at least.

Some have also reported that a simple reboot fixed it for them, it didn't for me though!

Let me know if this works for you!

It was like overnight that my battery went from last 1-2 days to not even making through my work day and I don't use my phone a ton at work. I've seen a lot of recommendation about Google Play but that doesn't seem to be my largest usage, my is the Android system.....any recommendations. I've had this phone for a year and half, is it just shot at this point. I love this phone and don't really want to get a new phone but I can't have no battery either.
