Pixel XL freezing up

My phone keeps freezing and I can't get it to do anything when it does. No response from any buttons for at least a minute and it will just start working randomly

I'm experiencing the same problem. My Pixel XL 128 GB becomes unresponsive randomly. Doesn't only happen while using a particular app or while doing a particular task. It's just random. Either I have to wait few minutes until the screen goes to the lockscreen or force a reboot by holding down the power button. Please help guys!!!

Aris/Priyal:  The article that Paolo referenced is a good start for diagnosing your issues.

As a first step, I would recommend booting into Safe Mode and run your Pixel for a while with just stock android software running.  If it still freezes in safe mode, then your Pixel likely has a hardware issue that should be covered under warranty.  If it doesn't freeze, then you probably have a third party app that has not been updated to conform with the latest Nougat OS.  Try uninstalling apps you don't need or use very often or any that might be suspect.  You can go to the app page in Google Play for each app to check on the date they were last updated for a list of possible candidates - i.e. anything with a last update prior to March 2016.

If you are looking to Wipe the Cache Partition, the instructions in Paolo's link are no longer correct for a Pixel as the Pixel does not have a Cache Partition that can be cleared from the Recovery Mode menu.  Instead you have to go to Settings -> Storage -> Cached Data to clear cached data for all apps.

Hi, I have been having the same issue, it does it every other day or so. It could happen at anytime, not related to a specific app, sometimes it happens whilst the phone in in my pocket and I only find out when people can't call me. Most of the time, after a few minutes it will start working again, other times I have to hold the power button to reboot. Spoke to Google support, basically suggesting that it's a 3rd party app issue, so try safe mode or factory reset.

Running in safe mode for a couple of days to see if it happens again is impractical. I've uninstalled all my non essential apps leaving mainly google apps, but it still does it. I do struggle to see how a 3rd party app can lock the OS solid. I've only has the phone a few weeks, so I'm not convinced a factory reset will fix it.

I previously had a 6P running 7.11 with the same apps running on it and it never had this problem. So I do think it's Pixel related.

Hi, My first Pixel froze again. I don't know what's happening to my phone. I was looking through Instagram. Then the screen became unresponsive, and then it blacked out. I tried to reboot it, force reboot it. It is still black, and nothing turns on. Nothing is working. I'm already on my 3rd phone! I may have to get my 4th phone. I updated my phone three days ago, and it's broken again! Why does my phone misbehave every time I get an update!!!????
