Pixel 2 usb-c headphone adapter not working

Recently purchased the Pixel 2 and am trying to play music with my headphones through the provided usb-c to 3.5m headphone jack adapter. However, sound is still being played through the speakers of my phone. Am I missing something here?

Dumb question, have you tried plugging the adapter into the phone first, then attaching the headphones?

Yes, I have tried it this way. Not a dumb question...willing to try literally anything.

Can you try with a different headphone?

Tried it with my coworkers headphones as well to no avail. Maybe they put a bad adapter in the box?

There have been some reports of bad adapters. I would contact support for another one.

Is this just a Pixel 2 issue? I ask because since Android Pie my Pixel 2 XL has worked every time I plug the dongle in. Even switching apps. Or is it some weird serial number group that got screwed?
