Tap & pay with your device

Depending on your Android device, you can use tap & pay to pay for purchases at merchants that accept contactless payments.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Turn on NFC

To use tap & pay, you'll first need to turn on NFC (Near Field Communication).

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices
  3. Turn on NFC.

If you don't see the NFC setting, your device doesn't have NFC. You won't be able to tap & pay.

Manage apps that use tap & pay

Many payment apps let you tap & pay. You can find payment apps on Google Play or in the Play Store app Google Play.

If you have more than one app that uses tap & pay, you can pick which one to use by default.

  1. Open the app. Make sure tap & pay is turned on.
  2. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  3. Tap Apps & notifications and then Advanced and then Default apps
  4. Tap Tap & pay and then Payment default.
  5. Pick your default payment app.

Note: To show in Settings, your payment apps must work with tap & pay. Money transfer apps and Android Beam don't work with tap & pay.

Turn off tap & pay

You can turn off tap & pay in 2 ways:

  • In your payment app, turn off tap & pay. Not all payment apps support this option.
  • Open your device's Settings app Settings app and then Connected devices and then turn off NFC

Note: Turning off NFC also turns off other NFC features, like Android Beam.
