Sort photos in album by date/time ...and independently from device
1
Now... that should be simple in 2019 (you'd think!).
You go on vacation, take A LOT of pictures (no answers to manual edit or move, please!) with your phone.
Your family ALSO take a lot of them with their phones, and on evenings, you share/exchange/beam pics with them.
You let your phones hangs on wifi and let Google photo do its backup at night.
This is how 99,99999% of the people in the world that use google photo works, because ...it's how it's supposed to work.
When you'r back at home, you want to create an album.
Easy: you fire up the app OR the web interface, select the pictures and create it.
Then you do a second pass and add maps, info, comments, etc.
WAIT... the pictures are not in the right order!
Even if you use the sort function, they will not sort completely, they sort by day but:
  • not according to different time within the same date (often!)
  • stay sorted by groups coming from different devices
And before you ask/suggest: Yes, the EXIF data are correct and coherent on all photos, since date and time was right on all phones used.

Now... when I use a command called "sort by least/most recent", I assume  (but maybe it's just me!) this doesn't give a **** weather the pic is coming from one device or another and... yes it takes into account also time!!!
But... you guys at google that do SW for the masses have your own peculiar idea about that....
OMG add a global sort function by album. Just sort by date AND time!
Everyone on the world (except you?) wanna see their album in chronological order, no matter where the pics comes from... and yes... time matters! not only date!
How difficult is that? Why is this not the default ???

Now I think... I THINK ..... this is waaaay more important than getting notification with pics of what i was doing this very same day 13 years ago, or showing the same pic i took yesterday with some meaningless filter!
C'mon people!
O.M.G. do it!

"Sorry to say, but GP is for the millions and not for the specialists."

πŸ‘†πŸ» I won't mention who posted this, but you shouldn't be "helping" with that attitude. ☝🏻

Why can't it DO BOTH
  • Have granny mode for "the millions"
  • Expert mode for those of us who value our precious images.
I suppose I'll have to remove all content from Google's stupid crapware, and use properly written apps that the developers understand what that app is expected to do.

Despite me not being some blah-blah platinum expert, I took my first computer class in 1983. Please don't listen to an expert with 36 years experience, selling, testing, designing, installing, troubleshooting, teaching(school certified & corporate), writing training documents, and using both *NIX, and DOS/Windows systems.

Been a photography hobbyist since 1974.

What could I possibly know?

Me too (even more :-).

And thereby I am able to adapt my workflow in order to bypass the deficiencies of GP by handling all pictures (also from my smartphone) via my computer before uploading to the web.
But "the milions" don't do that anymore.
And thereby I am fading-out here.
Bye

""Sorry to say, but GP is for the millions and not for the specialists."
I an sure that this is not Rinus' opinion, he just mentions what the Photos team seems to think.
See https://googleblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/picture-this-fresh-approach-to-photos.html :
"Google Photos automatically organizes your memories by the people, places, and things that matter. You don’t have to tag or label any of them, and you don’t need to laboriously create albums."

They could very easily do both, with minimal extra costs, but do not (want to) see the need or issues. Google preferred to start from scrap with Google Photos, with a new team that obviously never organised a photo collection. Take the topic of this thread (sorting photos in an album) as an example:
  • They adjust date/time taking into account the "time zone" but forget that many (most) cameras other than smartphones have no GPS.
  • When photos of different cameras are merged the sorting often goes wrong due to these timezone issues (and also by wrong time setting in cameras, but then we cannot blame Google)
  • But even from the same camera: when you upload part of the photos during vacation in another timezone, and the rest at home it also goes wrong.
  • Or when you change date/time for example in Picasa, the time zone is always set to GMT+00, thus introducing additional errors. (I know add 1 minute to ALL photos to at least get them in the same time zone, or use another program like Irfanview or EXIFtool)
  • How difficult can it be to add sorting by file name? When we asked D. Lieb he said that they might add it one day ... but he does not seem to see the need/urgency. When you have a twitter account you can ask him.
  • See this link for more info about sorting in Google Photos

Maddening. I uploaded 200 family photos, many one hundred years old, and took pains to name them so they would appear in order. Well Google doesn't work that way does it. So it was suggested to edit the date taken within the GP software. Took awhile but job done. The result, the pictures were horribly out of order in the album I created. They appear in proper order out of the album but I don't expect family to paw thru all my photos to see the family history ones. I have wasted hours screwing with this. Drag and drop to organize, are you daft? Do you have any idea the frustration involved doing that with 200 photos? Thanks for nothing Google! Like you give a damn.

@User 12562572706470783424

After you edited date/time in Google Photos you may have to sort again in an album to get them in the order you want: open the album, click 3-dots > Edit album. At the top right you see the "Sort" icon (2 arrows). Now sort for example "Oldest first".

Others viewing your album should see it in the same order, but when they either add to their library and create a new album, or when they download the order gets lost. Therefore it is better to change date/time on a computer before you upload. See this link.

And for sure I share your frustration about not being able to sort by file name in an album. We even talked to D. Lieb and he did not seem to understand or did not care. If you have a twitter account you can ask him ...

Thanks for the reply. I guess you do give a damn. :-)
I followed the instructions in your first paragraph. It was set to oldest first, which I would like, but the photos did not show in the order I had set the date/time to with Google Photos.
The trick was to change to newest first then back to oldest first, then all appeared as I wished.

The second paragraph about changing date/time prior to upload. I would prefer to do this. What stands in the way is gaining permissions in Windows to enable file data to be changed. First, I unchecked read only in all the files which had no effect. Then it gets very frustrating to set permissions after that.  The hoops Windows wants you to jump thru are numerous and convoluted. Tutorials gloss over or are old an outdated. I always give up on gaining permissions. I tried batch editing with Irfanview but it didn't work probably because of Windows permissions.

D. Lieb needs a stern talking to.

Again thanks for your reply.
