Photos are 'all backed up' but when I try to delete it says 'Some of these items aren't backed up' 0 Recommended Answers 19 Replies 57 Upvotes

Google Photos has always worked fine for me, but yesterday I went on to delete some photos (I have to do it manually to make sure they're all properly backed up as I have OCD) and although the 'back up' icon at the top says 'complete' and although there are no icons on the images themselves I get this error: 'Some items aren't backed up to your Google Photos Library, and this will permanently delete them' which is obviously what I don't want!! I really need to free up space on my device and this is making me panic. I need it to work. I have left it overnight but the problem persists.

Free-up space (only if used when having good wifi) just deletes all originals already saved at Google except the few not backupped yet, so these will stay on your phone.

I can't guess what is wrong with these images, but Apple is famous for creating non-compatible stuff.
Perhaps others know a solution for them or just accept that you can't have all.
Downloading to computer maybe a good solution, because then you can remove them manually.

Hi Peter, I appreciate your response but I do know how Google Photos works! There are no icons saying the photos are currently being backed up, the status bar says all photos are backed up, and when I click on each individual photo it doesn't give me the option to back up, presumably because they already are! This is the reason I am concerned. The error only occurs when I try to select and delete multiple photos - when I click individually on those images to delete I can do so as normal without the 'Images not backed up' message, which shows that this is a Google Photos error.

Any luck resolving this? I'm having the same exact issue. Photos show that they're backed up already but if I select multiple ones to delete device original it says some photos are not backed up.

I've had the same problem. In addition to this, some photos stored locally on my phone don't show up in Google photos. One solution I read for this was to delete the app off of the phone to clear the cached data. I deleted the app, reinstalled, and neither problem was fixed.

I also have this issue. I select one photo at a time to delete from device and it states "photo not backed up"  Android recently updated and google drive changed its syncing option. Is this when it started for others?

I'm also having this exact issue, one photo is fine but selecting multiple photos gives me that message, I also have ocd too, small world lol, but my storage is so full and I need to have my pictures backed up so I can free up space!! I did kind of a test though, I selected all my photos from today and deleted them despite the "some of these items are not backed up etc etc this will permanently delete them" and they're still on my google photos, even though on my phone they are in recently deleted.

I have the same issue (iPhone) but I’m just anxious about losing photos (as opposed to OCD)

This bug still doesn't seem to be fixed and I know it's horrible especially with OCD but I've found a temporary fix!
Go to your google dashboard (https://www.techjunkie.com/count-google-photos/ click on "navigate to your google dashboard" link in the article), it will show you how many photos are in google photos, keep it open and write down the number of photos, then press free up space (despite the "these may not be backed up" message, then once they are deleted from your camera roll, refresh the google dashboard and if it's the same number your photos are safe! Sometimes the number goes up one or two I'm not sure why but I've been doing this for about a month and all of my photos are still safe in google photos! :)
also report this bug by pressing the "send feedback" button! I've done it but since this doesn't seem to affect tons of people they may not even be aware of it.

Able to resolve my issue - I got the same message when I was trying to remove my Jan pics from my device to free up space. I checked the  online count vs phone count and found that my phone had 1 more file than was online. Comparing the files one by one I found the file that was not backed up. It was a video file and upon opening the file I discovered that the "video" only had audio and the video was blank, just a black screen. I deleted this bad file (don't know why the video was messed up) and that resolved the issue. I was able to remove the 300 files from my device without getting the "some files are not backed up message." Something was obviously wrong with that file which apparently also kept it from backing up. (Windows 10 and Pixel 2)
