How do I backup Google Photos to an external drive?

Google is now removing syncing between Drive and Photos. I used this feature to avoid manual importing to my PC and also have a local backup of my Photos. My workflow is as follows:

  1. Take photos on my Android
  2. Google Photos app syncs
  3. Google Photos syncs to Drive folder
  4. I do my culling in the Photos app or in the Drive folder on Windows
  5. Then I take what I want to save to a separate folder on my PC that is organized into sub folders
  6. This folder on my PC is then backed up to Google Photos with Backup and Sync
  7. This folder is also backed up to an external hard drive using Veeam

Can someone suggest an alternative workflow? I want a local copy so that I protected against Google corrupting my data (that has happened before) and aggressive ransomware that would overflow the version history in Drive so that I have no way to recover.

Yes, the original will still be on the PC which is what I prefer, then I drag and drop daily to an secure external drive in a dated folder which puts the OneDrive copy in the online trash for 30 days. I back up in Original size, edit in Google Photos and recover to HQ for viewing and sharing and also place each photo in an album which can be downloaded to PC at any time if needed.

To summarise, I have the originals in secure backup and edited HQ online for sharing

I have been using MicroSoft SyncToy 2.1(x64) for many years.

Does it help even if my Google Photos are not synced to my PC through Drive?

I started to use OneDrive to sync photos to my PC, it involves manual intervention but is the only option I can think of to replace the GPf sync post 10th July

OneDrive is an option. I used that before Google Photos. I think that I would loose the ability to do culling on my Android. The nice thing about Photos is that it doubles as a gallery app. With OneDrive, if I delete from my device it will still be on my PC if it was synced to OneDrive.

I see. That will not work for me because my originals does not fit in the OneDrive plan without Office 365. I pay for Google One so I can backup my originals.

I don't use any OneDrive storage, I use OneDrive as a transit download to my PC and dragging them from the Camera Roll on my PC to secure storage which places the OneDrive copy in the OneDrive trash where it sits for 30 days before permanent deletion.

It is also worth remembering that if you Backup at Original then use Free up space you will then only have one Original copy online and no backup copies.

@Gabriel
"With OneDrive, if I delete from my device it will still be on my PC"
Is not that the idea of a back-up ? Google wants to avoid any intervention of the users at the cost of safety. They even mislead the (less experienced) users by calling it "Backyp & Sync".

@Peter
I very much like your workflow. In fact I use the same: backup to OneDrive as a transit which safeguards the photos from mobile device without interfering with the photos from the other cameras. A bit of manual intervention but that is hard to avoid if you want to keep control and add all photos to albums.

@Gabriel
Adding all photos to albums (theme or year albums) is also a good idea, for example if you want to download originals AND edited copies by using Takeout. Otherwise the result of Takeout is a rather big mess with many tiny day-albums, even many empty ones.

You find more info about downloading in this link. Comments and suggestions for corrections welcome.
