Upload photos from PC to Google Photos in batches
1
I have been uploading my photos in Google Photos for years either directly from my Android phones when I take pictures or edit them with some apps or from a folder on my PC that Google Photos used to recognize as a place to upload pictures. It was fantastic because of the following :
- I could import thousands of pictures on my PC so easily with no further link with folders on my PC. No fear of deleting in the cloud as they are not sync.
- Uploading photos from a PC folder is far more convenient than from a web browser that must be open during all the process and taking processor resources.
- As it's a background task I don't have to follow it.
- I can pause the process any time and even shutdown my PC and the process resumes automatically. It's the same when internet connection shutdowns
- I could find all theses pictures in Google Photos folder in Google Drive on my PC with subfolders of years and months. This is so convenient to find pictures
- Pictures from my Android phones and my PC were found in the same folders on my PC

I tried backup and sync and it was a mess. I was completely lost as I could not find my pictures in Google Photos folder in Google Drive. Deleting the pictures on my PC also deleted the photos in the cloud.

Now I use import from web browser to have my pictures in Google Photos folder in Drive but it's not convenient at all. It takes too much time. The process has to restart from begining when I lose internet connection or my PC shutdown.

Google, please bring back the former uploading from PC solution!!!

  • The old desktop uploader is disabled and replaced by Backup & Sync. Google will certainly not bring it back.

  • "I could not find my pictures in Google Photos folder in Google Drive."
The Google Photos folder in Drive shows photos from Google Photos and is NOT intended to upload to Google Photos. Also uploading photos from computer to the Google Photos folder makes no sense. It does not work that way.

  • You have the following options to upload from computer to Google Photos:
    • Use Backup & Sync. I think that, with the correct settings, it should NOT delete in the cloud when you delete from the computer. But I am no expert (don't use B&S).
    • You can use the Upload button in Google Photos
    • You can drag & drop photos to https://photos.google.com or directly into an album

Hi @janvb

Thanks for the reply. I don't upload pictures from the Google Photos folder in Google Drive. I just use it for an offline review of my pictures as they are very well classified there.
I don't upload from my computer to the Google Photos folder. I upload to see them in Google Photos in the cloud. It's only when I upload in the cloud that I can later see them in GP folder in Drive.
The problem is that B&S is syncing folders on my PC. This I don't want.

The syncing part in B&S just copies your folder structure on a special tab on Drive, but usually that takes no additional storage. At the same time (new) pictures will be uploaded to Photos like in the past.
With the setting "Don't remove everywhere" you will not have the problem that deletions will be synced.

Sorry I misunderstood. I leave it to the B&S experts ...

@Alex De Lara,

If you can explain your frustration maybe someone can help. It has been a long time since this was discussed and the apps involved have been developed along with the operating systems.

The best option would be to create a new question with more detail of exactly what is frustrating you, on which platform, and under what conditions.

Please raise a new question by going to https://support.google.com/photos/thread/new and fill in as much information as you can, including type of device, and software version.  If possible, including a screenshot is very helpful.

Thank you,
Peter
