You can't add captions which really are stored in the files as captions should be.
But you should be able to type descriptions at your own pictures - on top of the infotab indeed - however not at pictures shared unless they were saved into your own library before.
Such descriptions are saved at Google only, so they are lost if files are downloaded to a computer by shared people. But most people never download anything.

Hi Ahadi

You can add a description, but not caption, to a photo on Google Photos.

  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Select an image to open in full screen view
  3. Select the : menu
  4. Select Info
  5. Add a description
If you would prefer to add captions, you can try making an album and then adding text
  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Select Assistant
  3. Select Album > Add a title and save
  4. Automatically add photos, or Select Photos then Add
  5. After you have added images, select the : menu > Edit album
  6. Select the Tt icon to add a text box / caption
  7. You can then long press and drag the text to where you want in the album.
  8. When finished, select the Save checkmark in the upper left
Let us know if this helped.

Enjoy!

What good are photos in an album if I can't label them individually? Is an album just a group of related photos with no history or story?  This doesn't work for me.

Hi Helen Bastian,
yes, I have been complaining about this for a couple of years now. You used to be able to add captions to photos on Picasa on line, but since Goggle bought it and "improved" it, calling the site "Google Photos", you can't add captions.

So you can't tell your friends what they are seeing in the photos you would like to share with them. You can only have "dumb" photos. A pity.

If anyone reading this can point me to a photo sharing site that allows you to explain your photos by a real caption visible just beneath the photo, I would be very interested. Thanks in advance!

That is not fully true James, see below:

The large picture shows what you see if you view individual pictures on the website (https://photos.google.com) in the browser on your computer after you move the mouse a bit or if you walk through te pictures one-by-one, but not in an automatic slideshow hélas (asked many times, but Google has very bad ears).

The small insert is in the mobile Photos-app when you view individual pictures and you move-up a picture with your fingertip until you see all technical information. In normal viewing the text would be too small if shown at the bottom of the pictures.

But text typed in the infopanel is stored at Google only and not downloaded together with the pictures like Picasa did - that was real metadata stored in the picturefiles.

Not handy and not true either - unless you explain exactly what you are doing from start.

Later edit:
You probably are talking about changing filenames or filenumbers and not about descriptive text (caption). Please read the comments before.
