My Samsung S7 active just updated to Android 8 and Samsung user experience 9.  Google photos now keeps crashing.  I cannot turn on backup and sync.  I have restarted, updated to latest photos version, forced stop and cleared cache

Hey Morgan,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please try the same on a different device/account (if possible) to check what happens next and to know if this is a device specific issue or account related issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

I only have one phone so I'm not able to try this on a different device.

Hello Morgan,

Thanks for writing back.

Could you please try signing out and signing back in to Google Photos to check if this sorts the issue.

Regards,
Amanda

I already tried that and it actually made it worse.  Now it crashes as soon as I open the photos app.  I read in another post that this has been a common problem and the only resolution is factory reset.

Hello Morgan,

Thanks for writing back.

Could you please try using the Google Photos app by switching the phone to Safe Mode? In Android 4.1 or later versions, to reboot into safe mode you have to long press the power button until you get the options menu which has the following options –  Power off, Airplane mode, and Silent mode. After getting these options on your screen, long press the Power off button, you will be getting a message that prompts you to reboot your device to safe mode. By tapping the OK button, your device will reboot into safe mode, which will disable all third party applications you have installed. You can be sure that your device started in safe mode by seeing a safe mode indicator on the bottom left side corner of your device screen.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Amanda

yes, when I logged in with a different account, same issues occurred.  I just ended up doing a factory reset and the issue is now resolved.

I found a possible solution in another post.  I tried it a couple of days ago and so far, so good.  (I took a screen shot of it, but it cut off the name of the person that posted it, so I apologize to whoever the original person was for not citing them.)  Follow these steps as quoted from the other post:

1.  Settings (widget symbol in upper right)
2.  Apps (Default apps, App permissions)
3.  Tap on the three-dot symbol on the upper right of APPS menu
4.  Select Show system apps
5.  Select Media Storage
6.  Long press on Storage
7.  Press both Clear Data and Clear Cache
8.  Clear Data will give you a big warning that application data will be permanently deleted.  This is not deleting your photos and videos.  It is only deleting how the apps find them.  Once this is deleted the apps will start finding them again which is what resolves the problem.
9.  Wait for apps to find all the photos and videos.  You can use your phone during this time but it may take awhile until you see all your pictures.
10.  Restart your phone after a few minutes and everything will be loaded back to normal

Hopefully this will help!
