When you open an image in Google Photos, the second icon from the left (looks like three lines with slider-type illustration) is the editing icon. The pencil icon previously in Google Photos was replaced by this icon.

1) System > Clear default apps for images
2) Open an image in another app, (not Google Photos)
3) Click "Edit" button in that app
4) choose Google Photos as the editing app
Any time I open an image / photo in Google Photos, the editing button is missing - but if I choose "Edit" from any other photo app and then choose to edit with Google Photos - it works.. Bummer. Must be some work around without a root?

Here's what I've found re: ability to edit
1. You cannot edit a photo in a shared album that was added by someone else. The photo must be yours - (you can save that photo to your library and edit the copy in your library)
2. You cannot edit any photo in a shared album (even if your own) while using a mobile app. You can still edit that photo in the shared album using a computer and the browser version of Google Photos (photos.google.com)
