Google Photo App Movie Assistant NOT WORKING PROPERLY 0 Recommended Answers 76 Replies 603 Upvotes

I have used the assistant many times to make movies from my photos and videos. However today, I have attempted to make a movie, I have selected the pictures, video clips and music and saved the movie, the same as I have with my previous creations.

When I then go to the MOVIES folder in the photos app, the newest creation is there along with my others. However when I try to play the movie it opens up the editor to add/remove/edit clips and music again? It just won't play the movie! It also won't allow me to upload it the social media or send it to my friends and family.

All my other creations are working fine still.

What's going on? Anyone else having a similar issue?

Hello Christopher,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I understand and I know how important Google Photos is for you. Please give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Check your internet connection (mobile data).
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Amanda

Christopher Smith (and Amanda): I have exactly the same issue, and clearing data does not help one bit. (Christopher, did that solve the problem for you?) I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Google Photos updates to no avail. I haven't been able to make one movie since the "new and improved" movie editor was released. However, the new editor came out about the same time I got my new phone (Android One Moto X4), whose camera/camera app had given me other issues, so I'm not sure who/what to blame. (Christopher, what kind of phone are you using?) Anyway, I've uploaded four screenshots to show what happens.
1) After I applied edits but before I tapped Save.
2) After I tapped Save.
3) Immediately after I pushed play. Note the "Downloading clips" message, which makes no sense. You can see that the clips have already been downloaded.
4) A few seconds after I pushed play. I'm back to where I was at screenshot #1. The cycle is infinite.

Please help.

It appears that eventually a movie was saved to Google Photos, but it plays back in miniature on my phone. See screenshots. (It plays back normally on my PC if you ignore the fact that the resolution was reduced from 1080p to 720p.) In any case, there's no reason for the frustrating circular behavior described above. I didn't have any of these bizarre issues with the old movie editor. Also, the old movie editor displayed time information (length and/or elapsed time) for the videos being edited, while the new editor provides no time information whatsover. This ridiculous step backwards makes mefeel like a blind man editing in the dark. And even after the movies are saved and shown alongside regular videos on my phone, the movie lengths are not shown. How stupid is that? (Again, not a problem on my PC, but that's not where I'm editing--who knows why Gphotos doesn't include an editor with the computer version!) Why does Google fix things that aren't broken and do nothing about real problems?

Do I need to start a new thread to get a reply? And is there a chance this is an issue with my phone such that I might do better in the Pixel Product Forum?

Hi, sorry for my late reply.

I still have the exact same issue as you you above (a carbon copy as your screen shots show) everytime I make a movie

However.... After a period of time (between 4-24 hours) the movie opens fine as it should. I don't know why it is so delayed! Annoying

But does your movie still play in miniature on your phone? That never resolves for me.

No after a period of time it opens as it should in full screen on my phone.

Deleting cache/data... Logging in/out etc didn't resolve anything for me. I'm using Google pixel 2

The app used to be great. It all went to pot when they updated it and removed themes etc.
