Photos I've recently taken have disappeared from phone and cloud

I was home visiting family and we took a few photos before I left. I reviewed the photos while we were all standing there. This is important, because I know they were (at least momentarily) saved to the phone. The next time I looked at the gallery was on the drive home. For some reason, I couldn't see them in my Google photos album, but I could see the thumbnails and the loading bar near the top of the page to show me they were being backed up to the cloud. A little strange, but since we were out of service range when the photos were taken, I just figured they'd appear in the album again once they finished loading to the cloud. WRONG. I've checked everywhere. The trash can, archives, the file manager app on my phone...the photos literally disappeared into thin air. Any ideas on how I can retrieve them? I haven't seen that side of my family in almost 3 years, and it'll be a long time until I see them again. Only 3 photos from the visit, but it's all I had. It's so upsetting. Any help is greatly appreciated.

AndroidCentral had a fix that worked for me.

Go to Application manager> Media and Devices App> Storage > Clear Cache. Then Force stop the app and restart the phone. The photos repopulated the gallery when I restarted.

Alicia,

The Google Photos app does not automatically delete any of your pictures. Nothing gets deleted unless you intentionally and manually choose that option. So, even if your pictures were not completely or successfully uploaded to your Photos library, the original image files would remain accessible on the device.

If you did not manually delete the pictures, they should still be in the Camera/DCIM folder on your phone. If they are not there, the Google Photos app is not to blame for this because, again, the app is incapable of deleting anything unless you purposely choose to do it.

My suggestion is that you verify storage capacity and test for errors on the phone's SD card and/or internal memory.

If your pictures are not visible on the Google Photos website, then they have not been successfully backed up. In this case, there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get them back. Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

~ Greg

I have the exact same thing happen with my android phone.  Less than a week after taking photos or videos with the phone camera the photos and videos are gone from the gallery.  This does not happen to photos or videos I receive via whatsapp, but anything taken from the camera is gone in less than a week.  My phone still has plenty of internal storage available. I have the Google Gallery app that runs my camera so it is very likely a bug in the app.
This is incredibly frustrating but fortunately for me my phone is new and I quickly realised this unlike some other people here who have lost many years of photos.

Same here... Took a bunch of amazing shots, like 60 pictures over the course of 2 hours.. reviewed them in my gallery a few times to see what I'd gotten. Returned home, and I now only have 18? Hunh?? Where are my pictures?

Anyone find a solution?

@Rob
It is not the Google Gallery app taht runs your camera: the app is just showing the contents of the folder filled by the Camera. Maybe the app is in trouble, but you also should be able to open an app named My files or alike (on my Samsung in the Samsung-groupy), to see the real files in that folder "Images" or alike.
If they are not there either (not even after one testshoot), there is something wrong with your camera-app.

My photo life is over my head and better off deleted by the one stealing mind. But I'm sure photos are not needed for memories about any thing snapped by a cam. Sister s got a problem looking at all my gatos old happy days at pierce st. Love ya goog

Like everybody else I just experienced photos I took in the last week or two disappear. Distraught doesn't begin to describe how I feel.

I just noticed that I'm missing a lot of photos, videos and screenshots!
I am heartbroken as most of them were of my precious cat who has passed away.... I've been trying to message Google but they are extremely difficult to get a hold of.
I'm NOT impressed!!!  Also, I read what a Google representative wrote in reply to these problems and I think he's full of shi*!!!!
Google has gotten too big for it's britches and doesn't care about it's user's problems🤬
I'll update my post if I receive any repercussions from Google for writing this....

Good photo app itself may not delete photos, but default Android camera app doesn't save it properly when HDR is on. Google Maps team takes care of users, I think. But not all Google product team cares about users sincerely, in my opinion.

P30 Lite here brand new and fully updated and my photos keep vanishing from both internal memory and SD card! So disappointed. Nothing works to stop this from happening repeatedly - returning this POS and avoiding at all costs!

My photos supposedly safely in the Google Cloud have vanished from my Google Photo Gallery. Only those stored on Memory Cards still exist. My locked files gone as well. I pay extra gor Google 1 protection.
