Go to https://photos.google.com/settings and turn "Group similar faces" ON.
After having it turned on you may have to wait a while to see any groups.
If you do not see that option, then Face grouping may not be available in your country (yet).
I am not sure whether it is available for School or G Suite accounts.

Open your Google Photos App.
Click Albums.
Click People.
Top right - click 3 dots.
Select Hide & Show People.
Voila! You will get a selection of faces from your Google Photos.
Select one at a time and name it. Click Done. This face will be selected into its own album.
Neat.
Repeat for more faces.

I'm on a Google For Education platform and it appears the feature disappeared from my account. I had it, I wanted to clear the learning (as it had learned some irrelevant test photos) and so toggled the feature off in Photos, Settings. The toggle then disappeared and I could not turn it back on to re-learn faces from scratch.

It was going to be a very useful feature to us. Is there anything we can do to re-enable it?

It does not exist on other GFE accounts either, so it doesn't seem to be just my own account, nor very recent accounts. It seems that by disabling the feature on my own account I killed it across the entire school.

I have the exact same issue Gordon McDowell. We found it very usefull to group faces and sent pictures of children to their parents. Also on the Google for Education platform

It appears that the option to "Group similar faces" disappeared from the Settings in the web app for many users. The strange thing is that the option seems still available in the mobile Google Photos app for the same account.
  • In one account, where it was activated long ago "Grouping similar faces" is still complete, with the option to turn on/off in the settings on web app.
  • In another (newer) account the option to turn it on/off does ONLY appear in the Google Photos app on my mobile devices, but not in the web app. On the web however the "People" album does appear in https://photos.google.com/albums and everything seems to work.
Conclusion: go to the settings in Google Photos on a mobile device to turn it on/off.

I'm using iPhone and have more than 1 Google account (one normal Google account, another Google for Education). I switch between them and the "Group by Faces" (facial recognition) is consistent with the web UI... toggle appears for normal-Google and no toggle for Google-for-Education.

@janvb. Unfortunately, on my side, the option does not appear in settings on the app (iOS). I do have a relatively new account. Maybe this is a bug. I am in South Africa. Tried to connect via a VPN however unfortunately this did not work.

I alco can not see the peoples album :(

Thanks for helping. Perhaps a bug?

"The option does not appear in settings on the app (iOS)"
Your nickname suggests that you have a school account. I am not sure whether that matters and could not find the answer. But one thing is sure: Google Photos is not completely supported in school or Gsuite accounts. I have also one school account and it does not appear there neither (I am in Europe).

We do indeed use a google education account and thanks for the feedback. It apears that it is there when the account is opened (My head teacher still has access to this feature on her account) however as soon as you swithc it off, you are unable to switch it on again.

Unfortunately it seems that Google indeed removed Face Grouping from G Suite / School accounts.
