Understand locations & edit them

Your photo may have a location if:

  • Your device saves your location.
  • You added a location.
  • Google Photos might estimate a location using information such as your Google Location History, which is stored in your Google Account, or landmarks detected in your photo such as the Eiffel Tower.

Add a location

  1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. Open the photo or video.
  3. Click Info Information and then Where was this taken?
  4. Add or select a location.

Edit or remove a location

  1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. Open the photo or video.
  3. Click Info Information
  4. Next to the location, click More More and then Edit Edit.
  5. Add or select the location.
  6. To remove the location, click No location.

You can also edit the location of multiple photos: Select your photos. Click More More and then Edit location.

Share a photo with a location

If you share a photo using a link, the location of your photo may be shared if you added it, changed it, or if it was estimated by your device.

The following situations happen if you don’t stop people from seeing the location of your photos

  • If you add a location to a photo, then shared it with someone on Google Photos, you'll also share the location.
  • If your device estimated a location, and you shared that photo on Google Photos, it will show the location estimated by the device.
  • If you edited a location that was estimated by your device, and then shared that photo on Google Photos, it will show the edited location.
  • If you shared a photo with a location that was estimated by Google Photos, and then shared that photo on Google Photos, the estimated location will not be shared.

Stop people from seeing the location of your photos

  1. On your computer go to photos.google.com/settings.
  2. Click Sharing
  3. Turn on Remove geo location in items shared by link. Anything you share using a link will not have the location details.

Location may still show if you:

  • Already shared the photo, video, or album with a link before you changed your settings.
  • Share a photo or video differently, like downloading and emailing it to someone. Then, the original location saved by your device will show without any edits you may have made in Google Photos.
