Create & edit photo albums

You can create, edit, and add things like maps and text in your photo albums. 

You can add up to 20,000 photos or videos to an album. 

Tip: 

  • Live albums are not available in all countries. 
  • Some features may not be available when you have a large album.

Create a new album

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Touch and hold a photo, and then select the photos you want in your new album.
  4. At the bottom, tap Add to Plus.
  5. Select Album.
  6. Optional: Add a title to your new album.
  7. Tap Done Done.

Create a live album

You can set up an album to automatically add photos of your friends and family.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. At the top, tap Create and then Album .
  4. Tap Select people & pets.
  5. On any face group, tap Select Select.
  6. At the top right, tap Confirm.

Change how your album looks

Change your cover photo

Change the photo that's shown on the front of your album.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. Open the photo you want to use.
  5. At the top right, tap More and then Use as album cover.

Change the title of an album

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. Tap the title, then type a new title.
  5. Tap Done Done.

Change items in your album

Move items around

You can re-order photos, videos, text, and locations by dragging them.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Edit album.
  5. At the top right, click import export photos to sort by newest, oldest, or recently added.
    1. You can also drag items to move them.
  6. Tap Done Done.
Add or remove photos & videos

Add photos

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top left, tap Add to album Add to album.
  5. Select the items you want to add.
  6. At the top right, tap Done.

Add photos automatically

If you choose multiple people, any photo containing either person will be automatically added.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open an album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Options and then Add .
  5. Select the face groups you want automatically added.
  6. At the top right, tap Confirm.

You'll get notified anytime a photo is added to the album. To stop getting notifications, turn off Notify me.

Stop adding photos automatically

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open an album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Options.
  5. Under "Automatically add photos," tap the person's picture.
  6. Tap Stop.

If you remove someone, new photos of them won’t be added. Any existing photos will stay in the album.

Tip: Face Groups isn’t perfect. Photos that don’t have any of the selected people may occasionally be added.

Remove photos

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Edit album.
  5. On items you want to remove, tap Remove Remove. Photos and videos you remove from albums will still be in your Google Photos library unless you delete them from the main “Photos” section.
  6. Tap Done Done.

Add maps and locations

Add locations

You can add locations and maps to albums you create. If you share the album, these will be included.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Edit album.
  5. Tap Location add location.
  6. Decide if you want:
    • Location: The name of one location.
    • Map: A map showing where you traveled.
    • All suggested locations: Locations and maps suggested by Google Photos.
  7. Tap Done Done.
  8. To move a location within the album, tap More and then Edit album and then drag it to the position it belongs and then tap Done Done.

Remove locations

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Edit album.
  5. On items you want to remove, tap Remove Remove.
  6. Tap Done Done.

Add or change text

Add text

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Edit album.
  5. Tap Text Text.
  6. Add text and tap Done Done.
  7. To move a text box, tap More and then Edit album and then drag the box to another place and then tap Done Done.

Change or delete text

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Edit album.
    • Edit text: Tap the text, then change it.
    • Delete text: Tap Remove Remove.
  5. Tap Done Done.

Delete an album

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Open the album.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Delete album. Photos and videos in the album will still be in your Google Photos library unless you delete them from the main “Photos” section.

What you can do if you didn't create the album

  • Only the person who created the album will be able to make these changes to it.
  • If you're a collaborator on an album but didn't create it, you can only add photos and videos.
