Edit your videos

In Google Photos, you can edit your videos with special effects, filters and more from your mobile device. 

What you need

Download and install the Google Photos app.

  • Some video editing features like crop, straighten and filters are only available on Android devices with at least 1 GB of RAM that run on Android version 6.0 or later.

Edit your video

Trim, mute, stabilise or export a still from your video

  1. Open the video that you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit Edit.
    • To trim the video to a different length: Tap and drag the trim handles to select the portion of your video that you want to keep.
      1. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the bottom, tap Save copy.
    • To mute your video: Tap .
    • To stabilise your video: Tap .
    • To export a frame from your video: Tap Export frame.

Crop or rotate

  1. Open the video that you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit Edit and then Crop.
    • To crop the video to a different aspect ratio, like a square: Tap Aspect ratio .
    • To change the video's perspective:
      1. Tap Transform .
      2. Drag the dots to the edges of your video or tap Auto.
    • To rotate a video 90 degrees, tap Rotate .
      • To make minor adjustments to straighten the video, use the dial above Rotate .
    • To automatically straighten the video, tap Auto.
      • Tip: Auto-straighten availability depends on the video.
  3. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the bottom, tap Save copy.

Adjust your video

Important: Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.

  1. Open the video that you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit Edit and then Adjust.
  3. Select the type of effect that you want to apply to your video and move the dial to make changes.
  4. When you've finished, tap Done.
  5. To undo an adjustment, deselect the option or tap Cancel.

Video adjustments

  • Tap Brightness to adjust the exposure.
  • Tap Contrast to adjust the difference in tones.
  • Tap White point to adjust the brightest value.
  • Tap Highlights to adjust the detail in the brightest areas.
  • Tap Shadows to adjust the detail in the darkest areas.
  • Tap Black point to adjust the darkest value.
  • Tap Saturation to adjust the intensity of colours.
  • Tap Warmth adjust the colour temperature.
  • Tap Tint to adjust the hue.
  • Tap Skin tone to adjust the saturation of the skin-coloured tones.
  • Tap Blue tone to adjust the saturation of the blue tones, such as sky or water.
  • Tap Vignette to reduce the brightness around the edges of the video.
  • Tap HDR effect to enhance brightness and contrast across the video.

Add a filter

In the colour filters section, you can apply the usual filters, like Palma or Metro, to your video.

  1. Open the video that you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit Edit and then Filters.
  3. Select a filter.
  4. To change the strength of the filter on the video, tap the filter again and move the dial.
  5. To undo a filter, select None.
Add an effect

Important: Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.

  1. Open the video that you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit Edit and then Effects.
  3. Select an effect.
    • To undo an effect, tap None.
  4. Tap Save copy.

Tip: Types of effects include:

  • B&W film
  • Light leak
  • Lomo
  • Dust mix
  • Chromatic
  • Fisheye

Draw on or highlight a video

  1. Open the video that you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit Edit and then Markup.
    • To draw, tap Pen Pen.
    • To add highlights, tap Highlighter Highlighter.
  3. When you've finished, tap Done.
  4. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the bottom, tap Save copy.
