Get started with Android Messages

You can send and receive text messages, photos, voice messages, and video using Android Messages. If you don’t have Android Messages, you can get it from Google Play.

Note: Android isn't the same on all devices. These instructions are for devices running Android 6.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Make Android Messages your default messaging app

If your device has more than one messaging app, you can make Android Messages your default messaging app.

  1. Open the Android Messages app Android Messages. Learn where to find your apps.
  2. When the "Quick and easy communication" window shows, tap Next.
  3. When asked to change your default messaging app, tap OK.
  4. Tap Yes.

You can also change your default messaging app from your device’s Settings app Settings. Learn how to set or clear default apps.
