Set up your Google Account profile in Google Messages

When you create or enable your Google Account profile picture in Google Messages, your name or initials and profile picture are available to people with your phone number and are shared in conversations. Learn more about Google Messages.

Share your profile

When you open the Google Messages app and you sign in with your Google Account, you can share your Google Account profile with anyone with your phone number.

Turn Profile Sharing on Google Messages on or off
  1. Open Google Messages .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Tap Messages settings and then Advanced and then Profile discovery.
  4. Turn Profile Sharing on or off.

  1. Open Google Messages .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Tap Messages settings and then Advanced and then Profile discovery.
  4. Tap Change.
  5. On the list, select how you want your name and profile picture to display.
    • If you don’t want to use a name from this list, on your Google Account, go to Personal info. Then edit your Personal Information.
  6. Tap OK.
Update your profile picture
  1. Open Google Messages .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture and then Manage your Google Account.
  3. In your Google Account page, tap your Profile picture or Initial and then Change.
  4. Choose the picture that you want to add.
    • You can also edit or crop your picture.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. To update your profile picture in all Google services, tap Save as profile picture.
  7. Once your profile picture is set, tap Back .

Tip: To choose a picture from a different location, use the tabs at the top.

Manage your Google Account profile

You can change your Google Account profile and manage what info you share with others.

  1. Open Google Messages .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Tap Messages settings and then Profile discovery.
  4. Turn Profile discovery on or off.
  5. Next to your profile info, tap Edit .

  3. Tap on Manage your Google Account.
Unlink your phone number from the previous owner's profile
If you recently got a new phone number, you’ll find the previous owner's name and picture in Google Messages. You can fix it to show your information.

Step 1: Add your new number to your Google Account

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com/phone.
  2. Check if your phone number is listed under your Google Account.
  3. If it's not listed, go to myaccount.google.com/profile.
    1. Tap Add contact info.
    2. Select Add phone number.
    3. If prompted, complete the SMS verification.

Step 2 (If needed): Verify your phone number

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com/phone.
  2. Select your phone number.
  3. Turn on Better sharing on Google.
  4. Complete the SMS verification.
  5. Once you’ve verified your phone number, the previous owner’s Google Account name and picture is removed.

Tip: If you want people with your phone number to find your name and picture, turn on Let people find you by phone number.

Create a contact from a conversation

Important: When Google can’t verify the sender's identity, next to the sender’s name, you’ll find a Tilde .

  1. Open the message from the contact you want to save.
  2. On the “Save contact?” prompt, tap Add contact.
    • You can also edit the pre-filled contact information.
  3. At the top right, tap Save.

Start a new conversation from a Google Account profile

  1. Open Google Messages .
  2. To start a new conversation, at the bottom right, tap Start chat.
