Change your Messages notifications and settings

You can choose whether your device plays sounds, vibrates, or sends reminders when you get a message. (Or, you can choose how your device sends pictures and videos.)

You can also choose how Messages handles advanced tasks.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Change global settings

If you made changes to specific people already, these changes won't apply. Learn how to change options for specific people.

  1. Open the Messages app Android Messages.
  2. Tap More Moreand then Settings.
    • Change your default messaging app: Tap Default SMS app.
    • Stop getting message notifications outside Messages: Tap Notifications and then Turn off Notifications.
    • Change what happens on your phone when you get a message: Tap Notifications and then Importance.
    • Stop playing sounds when you send messages: Turn off Hear outgoing message sounds.

Get notifications on your phone while using Messages for web

  1. Go to your settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications and then Messages and then App notifications.
  3. Turn on Get notifications while using web. You can also tap to change how important you want the notifications.

Change advanced settings

Change how Messages sends text, pictures, video & voice
  1. Open the Messages app Android Messages.
  2. Tap More Moreand then Settings and then Advanced.
    • Send a message or files separately to each person in a conversation: Tap Group messaging and then Send an SMS reply to all recipients and get individual replies (mass text).
    • Download files in messages when you get them: Turn on Auto-download MMS. To do this while data is roaming, tap Auto-download MMS when roaming.
Change settings for special characters, delivery reports, or your sending phone number
  1. Open the Messages app Android Messages.
  2. Tap More Moreand then Settings and then Advanced.
    • Change special characters in text messages into simple ones: Turn on Use simple characters.
    • Ask for delivery reports every time you send a message: Turn on Get SMS delivery reports. (Delivery reports depend on your carrier.)
    • Change which number you use to send files: Tap Phone number.
Change options for specific people
  1. Open the Messages app Android Messages.
  2. Open a conversation with one of your contacts.
  3. Tap More Moreand then People & options.
    • Stop getting message notifications outside Messages for this person: Tap Notifications and then Turn off Notifications.
    • Change what happens on your phone when you get a message from this person: Tap Notifications and then Importance.
    • Block messages from this phone number: Tap Block [phone number].
    • Add people to a group conversation: Tap Add people.
    • Leave a group conversation: This is only available if you have chat features turned on. Tap Leave group.
Turn off previews

You can see previews of links without clicking them. These link previews are provided by Google and are based on info from the websites they link to; they might use data.

  1. Open the Messages app Android Messages.
  2. Tap More Moreand then Settings and then Automatic previews.
  3. Turn off Show all previews.
  4. Optional: You can also choose to turn off previews when you send or get links in a conversation.

Note: URLs could have personal info, like your location or banking info, so only share links you trust.

Turn on dark theme

Important: These steps work only on Android 10 and up.

On your mobile device:

  • Open your device's Settings app Settingsand then tap Display and select Dark theme.
  • Open your device's Settings app Settingsand thentap Accessibility and select Dark theme.
  • Swipe down from the top of your phone’s screen to open Quick settings and then Turn on Dark theme. This setting must first be added to Quick settings.​ Learn how to use Quick settings.
  • On Pixel devices, swipe down from the top of your phone’s screen and then Tap Battery Saver Battery saver. Other devices may not support this behavior.
Turn off Verified SMS

When Verified SMS is tuned on, Google verifies messages from participating businesses. If you want to turn this off, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Messages app Android Messages.
  2. Tap More Moreand then Settings.
  3. Tap Verified SMS.
  4. Next to "Verify business message sender," toggle the switch to the left.

Important: At this time, Verified SMS only works when chat features are enabled, and is only available in select countries: United States, India, Brazil, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Philippines, Spain, and Canada.
