Submit product data sources using SFTP

What is SFTP?

SFTP stands for SSH File Transfer Protocol. SFTP is a common way for users to download or upload files to the Internet. With SFTP, data is securely transferred using encryption and no clear text file data is transferred.

Before you begin

Create a product file data source and activate the Merchant Center SFTP account by creating a password. Note that when submitting using SFTP, your file must be under 4 gigabytes (GB) in size, in either the compressed or uncompressed format. If your file is larger than 4 GB, split your file into multiple, smaller files before uploading.

If you need more help using SFTP after reading this article, read our troubleshooting guide.

Create an SFTP account

Your Merchant Center account already has an SFTP account. However, it needs to be activated. To activate the SFTP account:

  1. Create a product file data source.
  2. Select Add a file using SFTP and click View SFTP details.
  3. Click Create password. Your password is then automatically generated.
Note: Your password won't be shown again for security reasons. Make sure that you securely store your password before dismissing the pop-up box. If you've forgotten the password, you can generate a new password by clicking Reset password.
  4. Your Merchant Center SFTP account is now active. However, your first password generation may not take effect for several hours. If you can't log in to our SFTP server straight away, try again later.

Upload your file using SFTP

While you can use many methods to upload a file using SFTP, the instructions below are for the most common types. If you haven't used SFTP before, we recommend Option 1 below as it's the easiest to configure.

With all of the options, you'll need the following information:

  • Host name: partnerupload.google.com is our SFTP server where you will send your feed.
  • User: The SFTP username that you can find in your Google Merchant Center SFTP settings.
  • SFTP server port: 19321 is the port used by the Google Merchant Center SFTP server.
  • SFTP server fingerprint: 85:19:8a:fb:60:4b:94:13:5c:ea:fe:3b:99:c7:a5:4d is the identifying server fingerprint key for partnerupload.google.com.
  • Password: The SFTP password that you generated in your Merchant Center account. Note that this will be different from your Merchant Center password. Your SFTP password can be found in the details of any of your file-based data sources in Merchant Center.

Option 1: Transfer your data feed using an SFTP program

Option 2: SFTP your data using the command line

Note: If you come across any errors while using option 2, follow the below troubleshooting steps:
  • Clear your browser's cache and cookies, or use a different browser.
  • Double-check if the server information entered is correct.
  • If the issue persists, consider transferring your files through a different method such as an SFTP client, as shared in option 1, to simplify the process.

Login errors when uploading files using SFTP

There are several common reasons why you may have trouble connecting to the SFTP server.

You haven't created an SFTP account

Before you can upload files using SFTP, you need to create the SFTP account for your Merchant Center. Note, your SFTP and Google Merchant Center account logins will be different. Therefore, they'll have different usernames and passwords.

Your SFTP account hasn't become active

You may be unable to log in when attempting to connect too soon after creating or editing your SFTP account. It takes a couple of hours for new SFTP account information to become active.

You aren't connecting to the correct SFTP server

For SFTP, if you're using the command line prompt, you should be connecting to {your SFTP username}@partnerupload.google.com with a specified server port of 19321 (for example, sftp -P 19321 {your sftp username}@partnerupload.google.com). If you're using an SFTP client, you may need to prefix the host name address with the 'sftp://' protocol (for example, sftp://partnerupload.google.com).

You're using an incorrect SFTP username

Verify that you're using the SFTP name for the correct Merchant Center account. The SFTP username can be found in the details of any of your file-based data sources in Merchant Center.

You're using an incorrect SFTP password

SFTP password isn't displayed in your account for security purposes. If you've lost your password, you'll need to reset it.
