Join meetings with Room Display mode (beta)

If you connect your laptop to a meeting room TV or external display, you can use Room Display mode to streamline your meeting setup and have a better meeting experience, in particular if the meeting includes a presentation.

About Room Display mode

When you use Room Display mode, your meeting interface is divided in 2 to improve collaboration:

  • Shared view (on the TV or display)—Shows video tiles and presentations to everyone in the room.
  • Personal view (on your laptop)—Keeps your private controls (such as meetings controls, speaker notes, chat, participants, presentation controls, and meeting settings) on your screen. This view also centers presentation tiles, making it easier to follow slides whether you are presenting or watching.

Why use Room Display mode?

  • Streamline setup—Room Display mode automatically routes your meeting window to the external display so you don’t have to manually drag windows or adjust display settings.
  • More private meeting management—Keep your chat, reactions, and meeting controls on your laptop so you can manage the meeting without sharing your personal view with the room.
  • Cleaner visuals—You get a dedicated, edge-to-edge presentation experience on the TV or display.
  • Help us improve—You can use the feedback buttons directly in the meeting interface to let us know what you want to see in future updates.

Use Room Display mode

  1. Open Google Meet on your laptop and select your meeting.
  2. Connect your laptop to the meeting room's TV or external display.
  3. In the pre-meeting screen, also known as the green room, click Other ways to join and select Use Room Display mode.
If a TV is detected, this option might be selected as the default.
  4. If your browser asks for permission to manage windows, click Allow.
Meet requires this permission to automatically move the video window to your TV or display.
  5. On the setup screen, select your camera, microphone, and speaker.
  6. Click Join now.

Troubleshoot issues

If you encounter issues while setting up Room Display mode, make sure:

  • Mirroring isn't on—Room Display mode requires an active secondary external display set to Extended mode (not mirrored or single-screen). If your display settings are incorrect, you are prompted to update them.
  • Window management isn't blocked—Ensure you granted the window-management permission in your browser settings.
  • Cables are connected—If your display is disconnected or not detected, ensure that your cable is firmly connected to your laptop and the TV or external display.
