If I post a Google Meet link before a scheduled meeting time for students, can they join early? 1 Recommended Answer 66 Replies 1259 Upvotes

My school district is concerned about students using the Google Meet links from teachers to chat outside of the scheduled meeting times. We want to set up office hours for students but don't want to have to send new links all of the time. Is the link to the meet always "live" meaning that students can join at any time, even if the meeting creator isn't there?

Thanks for your post!  I'd like more info.  If Mr. Clark wants to have a recurring meeting every Monday at 9 a.m., if he uses the "clark11bio" on the first Monday, can he continue to use it for the subsequent Mondays?  Or does he need to create a new nickname each time so students cannot access it in the interim between scheduled Meets?

Hi User *******

Yes, they could use the same nickname, and the same link g.co/meet/clark11bio for Monday's lesson. Or each lesson with the 11th grade biology class (for example) if there is more than one per week. Each time he created a meet with that nickname, and as teacher, they can open the Meet by using that link, it would create a new URL, and that URL will be deactivated within 5 minutes of the last person leaving the Meet.

This is all very helpful!

One more additional question.

Once you make the nicknamed meet and are into the call, there is a box that pops up or that can be found in the bottom right hand corner with a link to share with people. Will this link expire just like the nickname when you end the call for everyone? I do not want to post that link anywhere, if students will be able to just bypass the class nickname and use the link when ever they would like.

Bethany, your question would be best asked on it's own post. This post is relatively old, with info and responses that may no longer be 100% relevant. It will shortly be closed to further comments.

In brief, though, you would need to confirm a number of things, such as whether your educational domain is set up correctly, then the answer is yes, students will not be able to join the Meet until a teachers 'starts' the Meet. Note, the Meet does not start when the teacher joins, but when they open the link, before they click the join button.
