Google Meet Crashes when using an external webcam

I have two users in my company that are running macOS 12.6.0 on intel-based macbooks, with Chrome fully updated. When they try to join a Google Meets with the camera connected, it gives the "Aww snap" error code 5 message. If they unplug their camera, it works.

One user is using an Anker brand webcam, the other is Nexigo.

We've tried clearing cache, reinstalling Chrome, incognito mode, one user even upgraded to MacOS 12.6.2. No other program seems to have this issue, only Google Meets in Chrome.

I am seeing the same issue on my end as well. My issue is occurring on MacOS Ventura 13.1, Chrome Version 112.0.5615.121 (Official Build) (x86_64), NexiGo webcam. Google Meet will immediately crash in the Chrome tab if NexiGo cam is selected as the camera option. No issues if using the builtin Macbook camera.

I have no issues using NexiGo with Google Meet in Firefox. Also, Zoom is working fine with NexiGo as well.

I have the exact same issue. Hope for resolution as this is my only solution for webcam.
HI all,

Thank you for the reports.

It would help if you could share:

* What model Mac and version of macOS
* What external webcam
* What version of Chrome, and whether it makes a difference if you temporarily disable all Chrome extensions
* Whether this happens if you use a different web browser, like Safari

- MacBook Pro 16" Core i9, late 2019, Graphics AMD Radeon Pro 5500M
- macOS Ventura 13.3.1
- Anker Powerconf C300
- Extension disabled still crashees
- Crashes in any Chromium browser (Chrome, Brave, Edge, etc). Works fine in Safari. Works fine in Chrome if it is the internal webcam

  • MacBook Pro 16-in 2019, Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M and Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • MacOS Monterey v12.6
  • Anker C300
  • Chrome vs 112.0.5615.121 (Official Build) (x86_64) - for me this only started happening after updating to this version of Chrome today
Happens with all extensions turned off and in incognito mode
  • Works fine in Safari

As soon as the camera light comes on to tell me it's in use, I get this screen:

This issue began for me about 2 weeks ago. I've tried everything I can think of. At first I didn't realize it was the camera that was causing the issue but finally unplugging allowed me to join Google-Meetings. Very frustrating when the "aww snap" error message was all I had.

MacOS Monterey
Version 12.5.1
Macbook Pro (15inch 2017)
Camera: NexiGO - plugged into monitor USB
Monitor: LG 32UN880
Chrome: Version 112.0.5615.121 (Official Build) (x86_64)

Safari works for camera but i can't toggle speakers to Airpods - anyone know why? Please respond.

Same thing happening with me! I can’t get audio on Safari.
Thank you for the additional reports!

I have reported this issue to Meet, but it can help if you all report it directly to Meet as well, using the 3 dot menu > Report a problem option.

I had to use another browser to even file the report! How frustrating.

Same things happening to me  with Anker PowerConf C300 for the last 2-3 weeks

P.S. just want to add that my old Logitech USB is working fine.

Was working yesterday before updating Chrome.

Exactly the issue I have with Anker Powerconf 300

MacOS Ventura 13.3.1
Macbook Pro (13in 2020)
Chrome: Version 112.0.5615.137 (Official Build) (x86_64) - up to date at time of writing

Please Please Please fix. It's very bloody annoying - especially as Chrome doesn't play well with continuity camera either!

Same issue, has been happening for the past 2-3 weeks. Using MacOS 13.2.1, only happens in Chrome and Google Meet. Zero issues on teams or zoom

I'm having the same issue with an A7Iv as a webcam for different browser-based applications (Google Meet, Riverside.fm)  I used to be able to just plug in the camera with USB to USB-C and utilize it as a webcam, but now it crashes everytime I try to load Google Meet or Riverside.fm. I was able to use the A7iv in Google Meet on Safari no issues - so we know it has to be a Chrome problem.

Yeah happening for weeks and no fix for it so far. Only chrome has the issue with my Anker B600 Video Bar. It was annoying enough that when my Macbook comes back from sleep it randomly doesn't recognize my camera until I restart Chrome fully, while it recognizes the camera as audio inout/output as it should.

Hey all, since Google has been utterly worthless at helping anyone or even acknowledging this issue, here is a temporary fix:

First, completely uninstall Chrome.

Then, download this build of Chromium from March 27th, 2023, which is the last "stable" version before the problematic update:

The first time you run it, because it is "unknown developer," hold "option" and right click or control click the app, and choose "open." It should open normally from then.

Unlike Chrome, Chromium will not self-update, so this version can be used until Chrome gets its act together.

Instructions are probably similar for Windows but you'll have to figure out which build to download from Cypress.

Looks like this may be fixed as of the latest update?

It was fixed when I got a firmware update for my camera from AnkerWork app. My camera is AnkerWork B600 Video Bar. I haven't done the Chrome update, but it works flawlessly finally.
