Understand how 3rd party Chrome extensions work with Google Meet
0
This post summarizes how 3rd party Chrome extensions work with Google Meet, and how to address issues that could arise by using these Chrome extensions.

How do Chrome extensions’ features differ from Google Meet’s built-in features?
Google Meet offers a wide range of built-in free and paid features such as layout options, virtual backgrounds, captions, breakout rooms, attendance tracking, etc. These built-in or “natively built” features are officially developed, tested, and supported by Google.

Many 3rd party developers (i.e. developers outside of Google) build chrome extensions for  Google Meet users. While these Chrome extensions offer additional functionality, they can cause unexpected problems with your meetings. Below are several examples of how the refreshed Google Meet user interface could behave with 3rd party extensions. Since these 3rd party extensions are not built by Google, we do not test, maintain, or provide customer support for issues that arise with these 3rd party extensions.

                                                                          Users tile not visible

Presented content not showing/showing as a blank screen

Chat messages displaying in an unexpected way

What to do and how to identify if your meeting experience is impacted due to a third party Chrome extension?

1) You will see a one time in-call message informing you if we ever detect any installed 3rd party  Meet extensions. The messaging will say “You have extensions installed that may affect the quality of your call”

2) Please keep in mind that this is a one-time message. Hence you will not  see this warning even if you have problematic extensions installed after you dismiss this message.

3) If you see  this message and experience unexpected behavior in meetings, please disable any 3rd party Meet extensions by following the steps below:
  • On your computer, open the Chrome browser
  • At the top right, click More More tools Extensions
  • For the Meet extensions you have, toggle the extension to off
When an extension is toggled off, the toggle will look like this

If you determine that an extension you’ve installed is causing an issue, please reach out to the extension developer for a fix. You can also submit feedback to us with #Extensions in your report and we will update this thread with more screenshots/examples of issues.
