Google Meet has a new layout for laptops, desktops, and meeting room hardware that makes hybrid meetings better. You will notice improvements in how screen space is used and how all participants are represented.

Portrait tiles
The previous tiled layout is replaced with a more flexible tile aspect ratio. Based on the size of your window and the number of participants in the meeting, video feeds may now appear in the grid as portrait tiles.
Some tiles will still appear as non-portrait tiles (landscape tiles), if:
- Users are in Google Meet hardware rooms that do not have the Dynamic tiles feature active
- Users are in Google Meet hardware rooms that do have Dynamic tiles active, but there are more than 3 users present
- Users join meetings from Mobile devices
- It’s a Presentation tile (they don’t appear as portrait tiles)
- You manually uncrop a users tile
- A user has opted to have their tile always show as uncropped to others
Go back to legacy layouts
You can still go back to the legacy tiled layout in Meet:
- In the meeting, at the bottom, click More options
.
- In the menu, click Change Layout
.

Tips:

Make sure you’re always well-centered (framed)
If you use Meet on laptop and desktop devices, you’re automatically centered by default. If you have a custom background, you’re centered continuously, even if you move around in the meeting. If you don’t use a custom background, you’re centered just once when you join the meeting.
If you move and aren’t well-centered, you can easily re-center yourself:
- Hover over your tile.
- Click Reframe
.
- If you use a virtual background, you can’t use this option. In this case, auto framing happens continuously.
To turn this feature off:
- In the meeting, at the bottom, click More options
.
- Select Apply visual effects
.
- In the panel, click Appearance.
- At the bottom, turn off Framing
.
- To turn auto framing back on, follow the same steps.
Tip: It's highly recommended to use this feature to lessen the chance that you get cropped out of view for others.
Prevent your tile from being cropped for others
Some users, especially those who communicate with sign language, might prefer that their own video feed isn’t cropped into a portrait tile so as to avoid having their hand gestures cropped. To do this:
- In the meeting, hover over your self-view tile.
- Click More options
Show my full video to others
.
- In the pop-up that shows, click Show full video.
Tips:
- This setting is saved for all your future meetings.
- To return to the default behavior and be visible in portrait tiles again:
- Follow the same steps.
- Click Let Meet shrink my video for others.
