Turn off google maps pop up questions (construction, police, etc)?

Lately my maps app has been asking me a lot of questions while driving. Is there still construction here? Are the police still here? And a big pop up on my car screen shows up and stays there until I say yes or no. It is very distracting and not safe. Is there a way to turn this off? All notifications are already turned off, and it seems to be doing nothing. Using an iPhone SE.

Here in the UK, Google are prompting us to break the law. It is illegal to touch your phone and these "Is the whatever still there?" questions obviously require an input. This does not necessarily apply to Android Auto although they are still distracting and I should have the ability to turn them off should I want to.

Its illegal to touch the phone indeed. But prompts on a car screen with android auto/car play is fine.

hi paul, welcome to the google maps community forum!

thanks for letting us know - i am glad you're the one saying it, because that is what i have been telling people, many of whom have been dismissive.

Yeah it seems like Google maps is in no hurry to change this, if ever, so that leaves us voting with our feet.
Google has the right to put in a feature I hate, and give me no way of turning it off.
I have the right to use a different product.

hi paul, absolutely!

Have there been any updates to this? Is it possible to turn off these pop up questions? They are distracting while driving, & often pop up at more dangerous moments, such as when I'm navigating the heavy traffic around a recent accident, for example. The only way to get rid of these pop ups that I can see is to tap my smartphone when they pop up, which is technically illegal where I live.

hi user 1214850262520975552, welcome to the google maps community forum! has there already been fatalities as a direct result of users getting distracted by phone calls and text messages?
Mar 25, 2025
Yes, unfortunately. In 2024 about 3,000 fatalities due to distracted driving.

Who are you? I find your comments just a suck up to Google maps development … and dismissive of the many comments from users finding the pop up’s annoying. This feature should be optional. It MAKES one answer. There’s not even a cancel / I don’t know response option.

hi justino, welcome to the google maps community forum! the root cause of the problem has nothing to do with the device, and therefore nothing to do with google maps, or any other app.

I dont think you understand that when your watching the road because a turn is coming up. Your watching the distance of that turn in an area of multiple turns within a few hundred feet. I should not have to worry about someone posting a disabled car or ect disrupting my directions causing me to have to take hands off wheel to push there, not there ect.  Cause me to cause an accident already.   Hands free, RIGHT!!

hi there cfanatic, that makes perfect sense. thanks for the reply.

hi user 1214850262520975552, no way i am aware of. there are good alternative map apps, no need to change to an iphone, unless you want to for other reasons, of course.

Your suggestion is another product then yous?    As a business man myself, stating my product iisnt any good is poor business.

hi user 1214850262520975552, if you cannot stop yourself from being distracted by anything on the device, please stop using the device. shut it down, if you must.

So your advice is to buy another product instead of making the popups where you can turn them off. You belief hands off shouldn't apply to maps.  Sorry thought we was past the stone age of pulling over to read a paper map.  I understand google owns pixel.  So I gess copy and past your replies need to get out

hi user 1214850262520975552, i did not necessarily say google maps was not any good.

I always liked google maps the best on my pixel phone used with andriod auto.  However now that alerts over any and everything covers up your directions. And you cant be hands off as andriod auto has on all my other apps when set.  And now google maps vocabulary doesnt understand idea we can see the tag on the map showing police, work, parked cars, and ect.  And insist on popups user has to take eyes oof road and hands of the wheel to clear the popup to see the route directions is insane

hi user 1214850262520975552, my advice is to not allow yourself to get distracted.

we are well past the stone age - not sure why we would even be talking about that.

hi user 11870351290374881317, welcome to the google maps community forum!

"i find your comments just a suck up to google maps development ….."

you seem to be complaining thoughtlessly.

"..... and dismissive of the many comments from users finding the pop up’s annoying."

you don't seem to have understood properly. and if you have, would appear you are being dismissive.

"this feature should be optional."

just your luck that it isn't up to you.

"it makes one answer."

really? it reaches out to you, physically, literally grabs you, and forces your finger to the screen? would seem to be ai supercharged, a marketer's dream.

"there’s not even a cancel / i don’t know response option."

so you want the feature to take up more screen real estate? very good idea!
