Google Maps - Send as text message

The Google Maps send directions to phone feature no longer is allowing me to send as a text message. It now send as a push notification.
How can I get directions sent as text messages again?

Google discontinued the option of sending directions through text messages & unlikely to restore that.

Hello

As I can see people are going to continue posting here about this issue, you can raise and Submit Feedback using this reference.

If enough people ask for it to be reinstated, then it maybe added back into Google Maps.

I agree.  While one one trip on my motorcycle, the phone was accidently turned off.  So I could not get back to the link so that I could continue my trip.  Since I relied on google and on the map to be there I didn't have any kind of backup mechanism.  I'll not expose myself to that again....

I am horrified to learn that google does not send written travel directions. Maps are   no use when driving on unfamiliar roads. Please reconsider.

Same here! I do need this SMS/text message option as it is the only option which always worked for me. I have linked my phone to my google account, but sending it to the phone shown in google maps does not work for me - I never receive anything on my phone?! Please bring the SMS/text option back - it's necessary!

You can still send directions via email.  

This option began showing up for me a few months ago, and I don't recall if that was automatic, or I had to make it happen via an option somewhere.

google becoming more like microsoft, tone deaf and more useless. I don't like the options they have setup.
A) my email pop'd from google destroy my inbox so messages to email are not sustaining and I want it that way rather than using a google app and having to remove all my unwanted email (archaic on google).
B) my pushed notification once clicked on are not available again, so if I close the maps it's gone. I don't want history on..

text was useful. Google less so.

yes, it was the most efficient method for putting directions on your phone! the other items do not always work 100% like the text message did!

I presume that Google removed send via text as a cost-saving measure, given the recent spat of workforce reduction at Google, and all the issues that have had with their workforce over the past several years.

You can search for directions on Google Maps and then copy the link to the directions and send it as a message.

They disabled this option and can no longer be sent via text.  Hugely disappointing.  Send them feedback to have it reinstated.  If more people complain they may bring it back.

Yeah, this sucks and so does google for removing text. I don't have phone notifications on so I can't use the send to phone at all. My workaround is to send directions to email and filter messages from "Google Notifications" to my google fi email-to-text address. I can't give examples here because google thinks it's personal information, but here's what it is for Google Fi customers; other services probably have similar... https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6356597?hl=en

The least Google could do is let us know that it will no longer send a text. I just WASTED 25 minutes of my time trying to figure this out. Please respect you my and all of your customers time!

Why would you discontinue something that worked? It seems unlikely it's a staffing or cost saving issue, because how much staff or money is needed to continue to runs lines of code that already exist?

Please restore.

The "Send to phone" option does nothing as far as I can tell. Send to what app on the phone? It doesn't seem to send the selected route to the Google Maps app.

I've found that if I have Google Maps App open on the phone and then click "Send to Phone" from the computer, the feature will work. However, if you don't have the Google Maps App open beforehand, that "Send to Phone" feature will not work.

But "Send to Phone" is not the same as TEXT. I can send to phone, but if it get cleared, it's gone. TEXT sticks around and is (was) super easy to find.

I too like that maps sent through text feature but I did find a workaround that does just that. I assume this is the PC version we are talking about? Or we can use the Google Maps App directly from the phone/device as well.

From the PC version of Google Maps (If entering addresses on Google Maps App directly on your phone/device, then skip to step #4): 

1)  Open the Google Maps App on your phone/device. (You may not receive your route from the Google Maps PC version if you don't have the App open on your device)

2)  On your computer's Google Maps click the "send directions to your phone" option and select your device. 

3)  Once your device receives the notification, click on the notification and the App will populate the directions on your device app. (If you are not receiving notifications from Google Maps, try having the Google Maps App open before you click "send directions to your phone")

4)  Now that you have your route up on your phone/device, click on the 3 little dots in the top right corner and select "Share Directions". You can send through text using this option.

it's work- after you have your route up on your phone/device, on almost bottom line scroll: "directions", ":start", "call" "save" and finally  click on "share". after send text message on your phone ( which previously your own number-  added to your contact list. A little inconvenient, but work well.  Good luck .

Please restore send via text option!!  This was the best way to coordinate multiple maps on the road.

Please please  reinstate this text feature, i use it to organize car club meetups and runs, also just preplanning any kind of drive it is a vital resource.  i can plan and text it to my phone then use it later.
