OFFSET MAPPING ISSUE IN CHINA

Dear Google,

Your silence on this issue, not to mention the lack of ability to even report it properly or send an email directly about it is quite shameful.  I've always been very happy with Google's services, and have remained a loyal user despite the Mainland's willful and obvious throttling of your services.  Nevertheless, I am constantly infuriated by this issue, and your inability and or unwillingness to explain it much less repair it is both baffling and tremendously grating.

Can there at least be an explanation as to why the satellite and map images are so badly offset all over China?  Or an approximate timeline for it being fixed?

At the very least can you ACKNOWLEDGE that this is an issue?

Absolutely horrible.   Using GPS with google maps is essentially worthless in China.  What's going on google?

EHG, I was ready to post a "thank you, but" post saying it doesn't solve my needing to use gps with maps software.  HOWEVER...something weird happened.

I went to ditu.google.com in opera mobile and for some reason the gps satellite icon in the status bar was flashing.  I opened up maps, it was still offset, and nothing was happening with ditu.google.com in the browser.  It was a lost cause, and I closed both opera and maps, BUT the GPS activity icon in status bar remained.  I thought that was weird, so I rebooted the phone.

Here's when things get more strange.  I opened up google maps and the offset is now gone.  GPs is reporting my position correctly on maps. Uh, what?

Thank you EHG for the fix.  As weird and unintuitive as the solution was.  It mysteriously worked on my Galaxy Note!

The local shops have some kind of solution for this - I bought my Note from a vendor at the Shanghai Railway station, it was a good price but it did come with all this evil chinese bloatware preinstalled (you could see the battery rocketing down!). I put on a stock HK ROM and it's working much better... BUT the fix they put in for google maps is now gone. It was incredibly accurate before, now it's the same old poopy offset. No dice from EHG's fix... I may go back to the store and ask them what they did.

btw, I did find a .conf file for the GPS chip - after my ROM it was REALLY slow to acquire a signal, now that the gps knows what servers to access for satellite data is back to the good 'ol 10-16 satellites in record time. But I wonder if google maps pointing to non-chinese servers is the problem?

Oh, and when I go outside and turn OFF data but only leave GPS, it tracks pretty darn well. Sheesh.

I don't know how or why it fixed it for me, but with gps wifi and syncing on, I went to ditu.google.com on my phone with Opera, (while connected google sync server on the phone) zooming into shanghai, and then opening maps and finally a reboot, fixed it for me.   Not saying all of these steps are necessary but this is what I did and I don't know how I could test this process for repeatability, so.  That was what I did, and the offset is gone... it's super accurate now.

On an unrelated note, sorry for pun, I got mine at the shanghai railway station too.  I rooted and flashed a cleaner rom to get rid of the random bloat the first day I got it, back in first week of november.

hey, I just saw this reply! been quite a while... yeah, I'm on to rocket rom v12, and the various random custom ROMs along the way have either fixed or reopened the !@#!#$%@%ing gps offset problem. Baidu Maps is always fine, though.

Trying your opera fix right now!

best,

scott
